Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story Seeing the change of fortune on the battlefield, staring straight into the eyes of the charging savage cud chewers, her grief turned to rage. "You stupid dog! You're going to get me killed!" With their alliance thus dissolved, she felt inclined to kick the dog as he sped past. She missed. Seeing the thundering herd approaching at a gallop, she sprinted after the dog that was wisely scrambling toward the fence. But what is this? The man who was her enemy suddenly appeared bounding into the face of certain death while clenching the red trunks with one hand. With a single wave of his free hand and a single word, "Stop!" he froze the advancing army of savage cud chewers in their tracks. Then he turned and helped the young woman get unstuck from the barbed wire. Prince had found refuge, the man noticed, under a parked car. The rest of the picnickers were smiling and laughing for the battle had not gone unnoticed. One of them, the one who now figured she had won the office pool, rejoiced even more. "Are you OK?" the man asked her. Instead of the hero's welcome and gracious thank you he deserved, she grimaced and drew her rapier. The blade had dulled in battle, however, for all she could manage was, "Those trunks look ridiculous on you," before she gathered up her Prince and stomped to her car leaving him still holding his pants up and more perplexed than ever. By Monday, the clouds of war were dissipating. The constant thrust and parry was only half hearted. Tuesday brought calm and another office pool. Wednesday brought silence. On the following weekend, they tasted each other's sweet lips at the end of their first date. In the beginning it had seemed like war. By the end, however, everyone knew it was only love. Tweet
