mother asked why I returned home that faithful day. without the loaves 
of bread I went to pick up I told her of the unknown nice lady I had 
met at the bus stop that day and described her as looking like a member 
of the family. In fact I said that she looked so much like daddy that 
she could pass as daddy's sister. My mother was not the kind of person 
to be easily agitated But I could tell there was something wrong with 
her. She looked at me as if she had seen a ghost. She hugged me and 
then started to cry. This was really a very strange behavior for a 
strong willed woman like my mother in whose hands my life depended at 
that moment Forget about the fact that she birthed me and held me in 
her arms once When I asked she explained to me that I was describing 
daddy's twin sister who had passed away about the time I was born and 
that she was there to protect me that day from the riots. I was 
dumbfounded but then she produced an old faded picture that knocked me 
out .The picture resembled the lady at the bus stop. My mother said it 
with such conviction that I believed her Then something occurred to me 
.I knew that daddy was a twin and his name indicated that the other 
twin would naturally be a girl according to the traditional naming laws 
Since daddy's name was Oko.the other twin had to be a girl. Was my 
mother out of her mind? I don't know. She would tell me of other 
sightings which were collaborated by my uncles an d aunts and grand 
parents and total strangers And what about my daddy? Well after 
thoroughly giving me the third degree for disobeying a direct order, he 
also looked all shook up. But I knew that he went to see his own mother 
in the city that same night in spite of the curfew on the city. You 
decide.
