Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “That’s great news Honey. So where you gonna be?” “Boston at first but I’ll keep you informed.” She tried to hide the bitterness from her voice as she spoke. He rarely rang her nowadays least of all to inform her of his whereabouts. “Think you’ll be home by the time I get back. I’m looking forward to seeing you again Baby.” She could picture the little smirk that would have appeared on his face as he had spoken the last sentence. “Neil, I have no idea. Like I said this is could be a big case.” It was her turn to be terse now. “Ok, Ok, I only asked. Geez, what’s up with you? I call home ‘cause you wanted me to and all I get is this attitude.” The annoyance in his voice was impossible to miss. “Oh boy, I’m sorry, guess I’m just tired.” “And I forgot the time differences again, didn’t I? Sorry Babe.” Neil quickly relented. His voice dropped to a whisper as he spoke, “I really miss you Honey, you know that don’t you?” Anne suddenly wanted to scream down he phone and tell him that if he missed her so much then he should get a transfer or something, anything so they could be a proper married couple once more, but instead she replied, “ I know and I miss you to. Guess that’s why I mailed you today.” “Glad to hear it. I’d better let you get to sleep big day tomorrow. Nothing else was there?” She paused for a second, glancing at the fish, before answering, “ No, nothing I’ll keep in touch and let you know where I am. Neil, you behaving yourself?” She regretted the words before they had even spilled from her lips. “And just what is that supposed to mean? Christ if you don’t trust me then just forget the whole thing. Look Anne I’m not going down this road again so just forget it and you wonder why I never ring home. I don’t have either the time or patience to play this game tonight so I’ll just say goodbye.” With that Anne heard the receiver click down. She turned to the fish and glared at him, “This is all your fault.” She told the inanimate object, “ If you hadn’t made me feel guilty I wouldn’t have said that.” She knew the accusation was stupid but she needed someone other than herself to blame right now and the fish was the only available candidate. The truth was she didn’t trust Neil any more but then after the last time she had little reason to. Tweet
