Your too young right now you don't understand." says Axel as he sits next to Aurora and hugs her. "I am not too young. I just think it's a dumb idea that's all. But I'm not going to stop you so go and see her, she's probably waiting for you now." "Be good while I'm gone sis'. don't burn the cottage down." says Axel, smiling, as he leaves to meet Luna. "I won't." Aurora calls out after him. Axel walks through the forest for about fifteen minutes until he reaches a small, diplatated, old church in the glen. He walks in the front door and sees Luna sitting in the front pew. He walks up beside her and asks, "Is this seat taken?" Luna turns her head around and looks up as her eyes meet Axel's, she jumps up and throws her arms around his neck and kisses him. "Oh Axel I thought you would never get here." Axel looks down at Luna's clothes and says; "I rather like these clothes on you better." "Oh Axel, this was the only way I could leave the castle. Father won't let me leave the castle grounds. So I dressed like a kitchen maid and left through the kitchen like I was going to the market." "Aurora thinks that we shouldn't see each other anymore. I think she is scared that she will loose me to you." Luna sits down and motions for Axel to sits down too, "Oh Axel, tell her she doesn't have to worry anymore." "I don't understand. Luna what's wrong?" says Axel as he takes her hands in his own. "Father has arranged for me to marry Lord Van. Axel I don't want to marry him, but I think I love him too." "That is horrible. How can you love him if you love me?" "I don't love him like I love you. I love Van's looks, I love everything about you." "Run away. Come live with me and Aurora." "I can't say yes right now. I have to think. Is that ok?" "I can wait, and I understand." Luna suddenly turns her head to the window. She motions for Axel to be quiet but follow her. They get up and head to the window, coming down the path is Lord Van with several knights and Luna's horse. "Axel you have to leave, quick out the back door. Go." Axel kisses Luna once more and then runs out the back door just as the knights and Lord Van walk in the front door. "Ah Luna my love, what are you doing in those clothes and outside the castle walls?" says Van as he walks up to Luna and kisses her on the forehead. "I like this church. It's quiet and simple here not like the church in the village. What are you doing here?" "Your father knows that you left the castle and he sent me to fetch you. He is quite angry about you leaving. He thinks you left to see that Axel fellow." "Oh he does, does he!" With that Luna walks out of the church and gets on her horse, and she heads off from the church and to the castle before Van can even get on his own horse. *II* "Amara we have been walking for two days now, can't we stop and rest for a while? Look there is a nice big lake right over there." says Avis wearily. "Yes I guess your right Avis. Drake can you see the lake she is pointing to?" "Sure it's right over there, through the trees. We can stop for the night. I can catch some fish for us to eat." So they walk through the trees and sit on the edge of the lake. Amara looks at the glassy surface on the lake and sees her reflection. Her face is smudged with soot and dirt, her hair is wild and dirty. She plunges her hands into the cool water and washes her face and her hair as best she can. Amara gets up and sees Drake trying to catch some fish and Avis is looking for wood to make a fire with. Amara gets up and moves to a sandy part on the edge of the lake, the finds a good size flat rock and starts to dig a hole to build the fire in, she then gathers a bunch of stones and builds a circle around the pit. Avis comes over and gets the pit ready to start the fire. Drake comes over with two medium sized fish and places them on a spit he fashioned out of some fallen branches, and then he lights the fire by reflecting the sun off his dagger and begins to cook the fish. Amara lays on her back by the fire and stares at the sky, which has turned a bright orange from the setting sun. She looks around at the clouds and she notice's a cloud of smoke rise from the trees just across the lake. She sits up and sees that the smoke is rising like it is coming out of a chimney. "Drake do you see that smoke over there?" says Amara pointing across the lake. "Yes I do, remember where it is across the lake, we will head that way in the morning. Here the fish is done, let's eat." The three of them sit around the campfire and eat their dinner. Soon it is dark out and Amara and Avis have fallen asleep. Drake sits by the fire and watches lights from a house across the lake. He knows someone lives there but he has a bad feeling about getting involved with those people across the lake. Soon he decides he should go to sleep, he checks the fire once more to make sure it won't spread beyond the pit, and lays down on his back and watches the stars until he falls asleep. ******************** Luna reaches the castle gate just as her father is mounting his horse. He sees Luna and gets back off the horse. "Luna come here!" he says harshly and points to the ground in front of him. Luna rides up along side her father's horse and gets off, she stands in front of her father and says, "Why did you send Lord Van to come and find me?" "You can't do this anymore, you can't just leave Luna. It isn't safe outside of these castle walls, and..." "It isn't safe inside these castle walls father." "And why are you dressed like a peasant girl?" "So no one would notice me, if I dress like the peasants they wont realize I'm not one of them. Oh but how did you know I was gone?" "One of my men saw you leave, they came and told me." "Well father, I would love to tell you why I left but it doesn't matter. I'm tired I'm going to bed now." Luna runs off into the castle, as she gets to the door she turns back and sees that Lord Van has just come in the gates and is walking up to her father to talk. She turns and runs up to her room. "Your majesty," says Lord Van, " Luna was down at the old peasant church in the meadow, down by the woods. I think she was meeting someone there. I am worried for her safety." "Good lad, come let us eat and drink and talk about your marriage to Luna." "Yes sir." The King puts his arm around Van's shoulders and they both walk into the castle laughing. Luna walks through the balcony above the courtroom to get to her room; she sees her father and Van walk into the courtroom out of the corner of her eye. She sees that they have serious looks on their faces. 'I wonder if Van told my father where I was' Luna thinks to herself as she ducks behind a pillar to hide from Van and her father's sight so she can listen. "Your majesty I can't shake the feeling that Luna was down at that church to meet the peasant boy." Says Van as he sits on the stairs in front of the king's throne. "For her sake she better not have been down there to meet that boy, she will marry you by her seventeenth birthday." The king says sternly as he sits on the throne. "But King Anadyr...." "You can leave out the king Van." "But Anadyr her seventeenth birthday is in two weeks. Don't you think that is kind of soon and a lot of pressure that will be put on Luna?" "She will marry you in two weeks. I will send Margret to talk to her. She is more than likely up in her room very angry at both of us." "Margret come here." Anadyr bellows. His voice booms through the halls. Margret walks into the throne room, "Yes your majesty." She bows her head. "I want you to go and talk to Luna. Tell her that she is to marry Van in two weeks, she has no say in the matter." "Yes sir." Margret turns and as she is walking out of the throne room, she hears something rustle and looks up at the balcony and sees Luna duck out from behind a pillar and run in the direction of her room. Margret picks up her pace. Just as she reaches the top of the stairs and turns down the hall to Lunas room she hears Lunas door close. Just as Luna sits in her chair and picks up a book, Margret walks in her room and sit opposite Luna on her bed. "I know you were listening to your father." Luna lays the book on her lap, "rats I was hoping no one would notice me leaving." "Well since you know what I am supposed to say.... Why don't we just get you cleaned up and ready for supper." Margret says smiling. "Ok Margret you run a bath, I'll pick out a dress to wear." **III** Axel walks sleepily into the kitchen and sits at the table, "good morning Aurora." "Oh so you finally crawl out of bed, what time did you get home last night?" Says Aurora as she turns around and with her hands on her hips and a wooden spoon in her right hand. "I'm not sure, it was late though." Aurora sits at the table across from her brother; "I saw some smoke coming from the other side of the lake last night at sunset." Axel looks up and he has a concerned look on his face, "you didn't go to the other side of the lake to find out what it was did you?" "Oh no, I did go to get some fish for the soup that's I'm cooking, and I saw the fire and I came back into the house as quickly as I could." "No doubt whoever it was saw our fire. They will probably come over to this side of the lake looking for food and shelter." "Can't we offer some food, there is lot's of soup here. Maybe they will just ask for directions." "Well maybe I can run over to the middle of the lake and see if I can see them, that way I can watch them and see if they are dangerous or not." "I think that is a good idea Axel. I will stay here and finish......... Do you hear hoofbeats coming up the path?" Axel quickly gets up and runs to the window. He pushes aside the curtains just as Aurora gets to his side. A woman comes riding up to the gate. She gets off her horse, opens the gate and walks up the path to the front door. "Axel, who is that woman?" "It's Margret." "Who is she?" "She's Luna's Lady in Waiting." Margret knocks on the door. Aurora opens the door, and lets the woman walk inside. "Is something wrong with Luna? Margret?" Axel says, worried that something has happened to his love. "Axel I'm not sure how to tell you this." "Oh no, what has happened?" "Luna is being forced to marry Lord Van on her birthday in two weeks." "She, She can't refuse?" Axel stammers. "No honey she can't, unless she is married before then. You know as well as everyone else divorce is not allowed in Avalon." "When can I see her?" "I will go and tell her you wish to marry her." "With all my heart I want to be her husband. You will come back with and answer?" "I will return as soon as she has told me her decision." "Quickly go and ask her." Axel says all giddy and excited. Margret turns and leaves the house to return to the castle. Meanwhile Aurora has noticed that the smoke has begun to rise from across the lake. "Axel, the smoke is back." Axel quickly turns and runs to the cabinet and gets his telescope. He runs to edge of the lake with Aurora at his heels. He looks through the telescope and sees the people across the lake. "It's two girls I would say to be your age Aurora and one man I would say to be 17 or 18." "Can we go talk to them Axel?" "Wait for them to come to us ok." "Ok, they are probably going to the castle, they will come this way." "Right, we will wait right here for them." ************* Amara sits by the edge of the lake skipping stones on the water. Tweet
