“ I came to ask your permission too marry Hannah.”

Jimmy John slowed a bit. Edmond inched closer.

“I promise to honor and give your sister anything her heart desires.”
Jimmy John nodded slowly.

“ IM not her, I cant accept the proposal.”

“ Whats that too mean?”

“ You have my permission.”

Edmond had extended his hand. A wide smile on his face. Jimmy John
ignored it.

“ I have work too do here.”

The wedding was a small event. Jimmy John again borrowed a suit too
wear. Tessie and Nathan held hands and grinned brightly at their sister
all dressed up with flowers in her hair. Edmond and Hannah held hands
and kissed everyone after the ceremony. Hannah left the small circle of
Edmonds family too sit next to Jimmy John on the bench looking out of
place with a small white plate in hand with cake and in the other a
small glass of punch.

“ I hope someday I get too see you happy and in love too Jimmy John.”

“Hmm.”

Hannah pushed back her hair.

“ After our honeymoon I want Tessie and Nathan too come and live with
us.”

“ OK.”

“Is that all you are going too say?”

Jimmy John stared ahead at the setting sun leaving red and purple marks
across the sky.

“ what else can I say?”

Jimmy John was drinking the glass of whisky the day after Tessie and
Nathan had packed and moved in with Edmond and Hannah. Jimmy John was
young but felt old. Some odd reason for the first time the small house
was so silent nothing could be heard. It was the first time in his life
he had come home to a silent, dark cold house. The silence had scared
him and he had shrugged his jacket back on and made it too the bar. Its
glowing yellow windows looking like an oasis to him. When the door had
opened and the old man walked in people didn't notice him. Jimmy John
didn't glance at him when he slid on the stool beside him.

“Wild turkey.”

Those two words seemed to bounce off the silence in Jimmy Johns head.
Those two words seemed so familiar it made his breath whoosh out of
him. Jimmy John turned too the old timer. His face was a maize of
wrinkles and his hand shook when he placed the tumbler to his mouth.
Jimmy John could feel his self subconsciously kneading his toes into
his work boots. The old timer turned too look at him. His eyes
crinkled. A smile.

“ you wouldn't happen too know this area would you boy?”

Jimmy John had nodded. Not trusting his voice.

“ Can you tell me where the Madden homestead is?”

Jimmy John stared at this old man. His tired eyes and face. His shaky
hands.

“ No such place anymore.”

Jimmy John finished his drink and slammed his glass hard on the bar.
Before he knew it he was back at his house. Sitting in the truck he
looked at the cold, dark empty house. Without thinking he was in the
shed and looking. Within minutes he found what he had been looking for.
In the dim moonlight he held up the gas can. it was rusted and had a
dent on one side. The half can was enough to slosh it around the entire
house. Jimmy John held the match till it burned his fingers. When he
dropped the match he walked away not caring to watch the flames lick
across the porch, through the livingroom and up the small stair case.

Farmer Howell clamped Jimmy John on the back early in the mornings light
and led him upstairs to the bedroom on the left hand side.

“This can be your room till you work out arrangements. We serve
breakfast at six sharp.”

“thats fine.”

Jimmy John stuck his big hands deeper in his jacket pockets and bumped
an end table and a vase crashed to the floor. Both men jumped and
stared at the glass fragments. A door swung open and a tall women with
red hair rubbed her eyes.

“ Daddy what is all the noise about at three in the morning!?”

JimmyJohn stood frozen and watched her hair swing. She leaned against
the doorframe and didn't even listen to her Father's patience voice
explain Jimmy John's situation. She was too busy admiring his dark
eyes.
