accident left too much to chance. No, I needed something clean and
fail-proof. Something that would leave no trace. A murder that wasn't
really a murder.

I had been struggling to find a solution for a long time. Then suddenly,
the answer was seemingly handed to me on a silver platter. This
couldn't be a coincidence. It had to be destiny. Here's how it
happened. I got a call from an old friend of mine that I hadn't seen
in years. Tom was in town for a convention and wanted to get together
for lunch. I wasn't much in the mood for socializing lately but
something told me I should meet him. Tom was working for a big
pharmaceutical company and doing research on the treatment of viral
infections. He specialized in diseases that were rare and fatal. That
was it! He had solved my dilemma. My wife was always getting a cold
or the flu, and on top of that she had asthma. Unlike my own, her
immune system was shot. The trick now was getting a sample of viruses
that I could use to infect her.

I knew Tom had always been attracted to my wife. I suggested that we
visit him in California so that he can show us around his lab. Tom was
the type of guy who loved to show off, so needless to say, he latched
on to the idea immediately. I figured that while he was distracted
with my wife, I could steal some vials containing whatever viruses I
could find. It was a long shot, but somehow I knew it would work. As
it turned out, he brought us to his lab on a weekend when no one else
was around. Given her personality, my wife naturally played up to him,
and he was smitten. It was actually much easier than I imagined it
could be.

"Honey, I don't feel so good. I think I must be coming down with the
flu again," she said.

Christ! This was too good to be true. My plan was actually working. I
almost felt guilty about it.

"Sonny, I feel so weak I can hardly walk. I think you better take me to
the hospital." Her voice was weak and labored.

It 's funny, but you know how sometimes you experience phantom symptoms
in response to someone else's suffering? Well, that seemed to be
happening to me. I was starting to feel sick myself. It took all the
energy I had just to drive my wife to the emergency room. When we got
there, they insisted on admitting the both of us temporarily so they
could run some medical tests.

"Just take care of my wife. Don't worry about me," I said.

I protested that there was nothing wrong with me, but they wouldn't
listen. Of course, the Doctor asked the typical questions about
foreign travel or coming into contact with individuals that appeared
sick. No one suspected a thing. As it turned out, they put us in
separate rooms which were right next to each other. The same nurse was
in charge of the both of us. I looked at her when she walked into my
room. She was really tall. I would say she was about six feet two
inches, and she had a deep, husky voice.

"How's my wife doing?" I asked.

"Well, we're trying to stabilizer her now. We'll have to wait until we
get some test results back" she said. "And how about you?", the nurse
asked. "How are you feeling?"

"Me?" "I'm fine", I said. "Why?"

She looked at me in a peculiar way, and then started fiddling with some
of the medical equipment that was attached to me. "I'll be right
back," the nurse said. "I need to call the Doctor."

I hate hospitals. Everything is so white and sterile. It seems like
death is lurking at every corner. It's really depressing. I heard the
nurse going into the next room with my wife. They seemed to be
whispering about something and then I swear I heard my wife bellow out
a loud sigh. What was that about? Were they telling her she didn't
have long to live? I was almost starting to regret what I had done.
Maybe I should tell them the truth. Maybe they could still save her.

The Doctor must have arrived because I could hear the nurse talking to
someone outside my room. I was starting to get very sleepy. I could
hardly keep my eyes open. I heard a faint humming noise from one of
the machines but I couldn't tell if it was coming from my room or the
one next door. I heard some faint voices but I wasn't sure where they
came from.

"Doctor come quickly!"

"I'm sorry, Betty. I don't think there is anything else we can do at
this point."

"Should I tell him? Maybe he'll want to spend some time with her.

"I'm afraid that won't be possible. The patient is dead."
