The Illuminati is an age old conspiracy, and they are after one man.

from any threats from without or from within, and that later the group
had spread its influence to the rest of the civilized world. The second
faction claimed that the false apostle, Judas, was the founder, and
that he never really committed suicide, but after betraying Christ,
acted to make sure the world would be protected like he had tried to
make it when he betrayed Christ. The third, and much smaller sect,
believed that the founder was the Magic Practitioner Aleister Crowley,
who was also a major figure in other, smaller organizations, that were
also unknowingly under the influence of the Illuminati.

There I interrupted him, “Just one small question, why are they called
the Illuminati?” I said because I was curious; I still didn’t think
what he was saying was correct.

“Basically, it’s because of their motto, “We are the bearers of the
Eternal Light”. Illuminatus, which is the singular from of Illuminati
and what an individual member of the Illuminati is called, comes from
Latin, and pretty much means to light up. By the way, Anthony, the
newer members sometimes call themselves the Leotfatu, which comes from
Old English, and means Lantern Bearer. Before the new ones called
themselves the Leotfatu, it was used as a kind of code of recognition
between members. Basically these guys think of themselves as the
protectors of humanity, and the guardians of the light of truth.”

“What exactly is that ‘Truth’?” I said quite sarcastically.

“By Deus, this is important! I am not kidding here, Tony!”

“Nicholas...“ I queried, “What the hell does ‘By Deus’ mean?”

“Oh that,” he mumbled,” well those of us who joined the Illuminati have
long since given up the belief in God. But old habits die-hard, so we
say Deus instead of God and by Deus is probably the closest thing to a
curse I’ve uttered in years. Anyway, where was I, oh yes, the
Illuminati really control just about everything. They control almost
all of the world’s governments, and are quite good at it. They also
control many important businesses, especially in the computer industry.
My guess is that they control Crying Dog too, or otherwise your name
probably would never have come up. They also control organized crime,
and have an especially high amount of control over the New York Mafia.
The rest of the truth is in some ways quite obvious. They make sure no
inventions come out until mankind is, in their eyes, ready to handle
them, though in my mind they don’t do an amazingly good job of that, I
mean take the Atom Bomb for an example, and they keep the existence of
certain powerful technologies secret from the rest of us. In many ways
they make the world a better and safer place.”

“Than why are you worried about them, and about them finding me?” I
asked.

“Actually, I just left the Illuminati. I believe what they do is wrong.
I mean they protect mankind, but they also make it so that we can
barely make our own decisions. What use is there for a mind if you
can’t use it? But, we really gotta leave. In fact we’ve stayed here too
long as it is,” Nicholas said, getting out of his chair. It started to
dawn on me that he knew what he was talking about. I was starting to
get nervous. So I got up and left with him. He took me into Manhattan
in his car. I really liked his car, a black BMW Z3; in fact I promised
myself I’d get one when my current car started giving me too much
trouble. He led the way to his apartment, but when we got there we
found his door on the floor, and his living room a maze of papers and
cushions tossed on the floor. Someone had clearly searched his
apartment for something, and from the look of the place, probably
hadn’t found it.

“By Deus! What happened?!” Nick exclaimed.

“What could they have been looking for?” I asked him.

“Oh... that I know. It’s my copy of the key.”

“The key?” I asked.

“Yeah. It’s my access to their information network. With it I could
bring them down a notch or two. They’ve definitely locked me out of the
network by now, but I have enough information on my laptop to hurt them
more than a little, and this still gets me into that. I carried it with
me to protect it from them. Thank Deus for that.” As he finished
talking we heard the pounding of feet in the hallway. “Deus damn it!
Let’s get out of here,” said Nicholas, as he kicked his back door open
and burst into the moonlit alleyway.

I followed him and we ran through the alley. I caught sight of three men
in black suits with black ties running after us. For a second I wanted
to laugh. Men in Black, how stereotypical, but a second later when they
had their guns out and I could see their laser sites panning around the
alley I wasn’t laughing anymore.

Nicholas grabbed his back and pulled out a small gun. He let off three
shots, and I saw two of our pursuers hit the ground. The third let off
a few shots, but missed completely. We turned into a new alley and
Nicholas tossed me his silenced gun and pulled out another. The man
rounded the corner, and quickly fell to eight shots by Nick.

“You still have the key I hope.” I said as soon as I had caught my
breath.

“Yeah, it’s right hear,” he said, pulling it out from his suit pocket.
In fact, it wasn’t a key, but a small computer CD.

“Good,” I said, “at least it’s safe.”

“Yeah, thank Deus for small miracles,” Nicholas muttered as he tucked
the gun he was carrying into waist of his suit.

I looked at the gun he had given me, then looked at him and raised it to
his chest. His eyes widened in sudden recognition. “Leotfatu, Nicholas.
Deus be with you.” I whispered, firing a single shot. I took the key
and started the journey to Crying Dog’s main office to return the key
to my boss who was also my commander in the chain of command of the
Illuminati. On the way there, in Nicholas’ Z3, the thought entered my
mind that I wouldn’t have to buy one after all.

* * * *

That took place in 1998. It’s 2001 now and the longer it’s been since
that night, the more I’ve been thinking about what Nick said to me. Now
I realize that what he said about humanity making its own choices was
completely right. That’s why I’m writing this. I have got to tell
everyone the truth. The story of Nicholas is going to be spread to all
mankind. When all know about the Illuminati, they will have little
power left over humanity, and we will be free to once again make our
own decisions. So tell everyone, make sure everyone you know, knows
about the Illuminati, and about how in a way they enslaved mankind.
They were wrong. They always taught us that most people couldn’t handle
the truth, so we had to protect them from it, but they were wrong, the
truth can’t hurt it is the lies that blind you. Nicholas was right.
They said they protected us from the blinding light of the truth, but
it was only they that blinded us. And always remember what you’ve
learned for it is ignorance that gives them their power.
