A lovely story that started life as a school assignment. | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story again. It seemed I cried forever: an endless torrent of burning tears. And now I hear her voice only in my dreams, see her face only in photographs. And now, when I go to see her, all that is there to greet me is a small mound of stone with her name inscribed in letters that seem to me big enough to crush the world. Sometimes when I visit her I sit there on the lush grass, green and growing and alive, and I water the flowers I have planted there, daffodils and tulips and lilies, colourful and scented and alive. Other times when I visit her, I stand on the other side of the field and thousands of wooden crosses and heaps of stone seem to separate us more even than the barriers of time and space, of life and death. I often wonder why she did it - not why did she do it at all, I know that, if anyone can ever really know - but why did she do it then, why while I was waiting for her, why when everything seemed to be turning round at last? But the answers to my questions have died with her and I am left now with little consolation, photographs and memories and the hope that even though time cannot heal all wounds, perhaps when time runs out, love can heal what is left behind.
