I am starting to wonder if my being so open with him on my first visit was a little too much for him. If I remember correctly, I wasn't the only one there. It took the both of us to do what we did.

be mad at you," I say wholeheartedly. I couldn't let him take all of
the blame.

"Well, I was wondering if you would like to come down here to visit me
this weekend," he is asking me to come over again. Atleast we're on
the same page. "It would only take you about twenty minutes and you
could be back home before it gets late."

"I don't think I have any other plans." I know I don't. "So I will see
you Saturday then."

"Cool," was all he said. He sounded relieved. Like he was the one that
was nervous. Like maybe I would turn him down. Guys really do go
through the same things we go through.

"I will see you Saturday. But I do need directions," I say as I reach
for my heart pad and pen.

Marc gave me very explicit directions and then his phone number. He
continues to small talk with me for a few minutes then he says he has
to return to his unpacking and that he will talk to me tomorrow. I
think we are about to cross some more boundaries and I am not worried
about it all.

Chapter 13

"Have you seen my curlers?" Marla, my older sister asks me.

"Did you check in the hall closet?" I say maybe a little too snotty.

"Yes, I wouldn't have asked you if I hadn't," now she's getting smart.

I want to lighten this up. "Guess who I ran into last weekend?" I say.

"Who?" She says half listening to me and searching for her curling iron.

"Marc Jackson," I say waiting for her response.

"He just asked me about you a month ago. Remember I told you about it?"
She says now paying me more attention. Suddenly she's interested.

My sister is the prettiest cocoa color. Smooth skin with lighter colored
freckles with teeth that are perfectly straight with the help of
braces as a teenager and now she was a mother. A mother of my
favorite, not to mention, only niece and she is also a wife. A wife of
three years now. I can only imagine how difficult it is for her to
hold her family together since her husband is out to see for six months
every couple of years not to mention him leaving for months at a time
within that stretch also. They say absence makes the heart grow
fonder. They are most certainly putting that theory to test.

"So, have you all gone on a date or anything yet?" Here comes the
inquiry.

"I spent the night with him the other night," I may as well spill the
beans.

"You spent the night!?!" She says.

"Yes, by mistake actually. We fell asleep watching Scarface," I say.
It is the truth.

"Watching Scarface, huh," she looks at me as if she is trying to read
my thoughts.

"Yes, Scarface." I say. "I like him. He doesn't seem like the tall,
skinny little boy anymore."

"He is cute in some tall, skinny, yellow man kind of way," she says and
we laugh because all of those attributes are correct. He has now
become a man.

"You know I am going back to Chicago after Christmas? My husband will
be back."

"Thank God," I say. Not really meaning it. I miss her something
terrible when she's gone but just can't seem to get along when she's
here. "Just kidding. Luckily you will be just an hour plane ride
away. Just do me a favor and not move any further than Florida or San
Diego, CA. Now those I can manage."

"Who said you could visit?" She says laughing even before she can get it
out. "Back to Marc," she says. I thought I was in the clear. "You know
he has a son, right?"

"He mentioned he had a son that was two named Marcus." I say. "He lives
with his mother during the school year and with Marc and his father
during the summer."

"So how do you feel about that?" She says.

She knows that I wanted nothing to do with a guy with a child. Don't
get me wrong I think it is a beautiful thing to have a child with his
father active in his life even though he is no longer with the mother.
I just don't want to have to be involved. If that child is a part of
the man I am dating life then he is a part of mine and I just don't
know if I am capable of functioning in that type of environment.

After giving it some thought I say, "I haven't given it much thought
yet. I guess we will cross that bridge when we get to it."

"Well I think you should start to thinking about it now. The sooner you
deal with it the easier this situation will be. The child is still a
baby so that is something you need to consider, too."

"What do you mean by that?" I say.

"I am a mother so I know the type of bond a man and a woman share when
they have a child. It is unexplainable. I think you need to know more
about the cause of their relationship ending. Then go from there. If
he is honest you will know how he feels about her by the way he
explains it."

"I am going down to visit him this weekend for an entire day. I may
bring this up then." I hope this doesn't become uncomfortable. I
really was hoping to enjoy myself with him this weekend. But first
things first. I really like this guy and I want to stop now if there
is a problem rather than letting it escalate over time. I am going to
nip this in the bud before it blooms.
