half his life wanting to ask her this question. He was dreading it, but
he had promised Jemma that he would ask her, and he couldn't go back on
his word, could he?

‘Oh, Britney, can I ask you something?' Liam said to her just before he
was about to leave the supermarket.

‘Course you can,' she answered, wondering what he had on his mind to ask
her.

‘You busy tomorrow night?'

She had to think about what she was going to say because she was
supposed to be seeing Darren, but she liked Liam more. She liked him
when they were in school together, and she doubted he ever knew either.

‘No, actually I am not. What did you have in mind?'

‘The cinema. There is this dead good film on,' he lied. He hadn't got a
clue what was showing at the cinema, but she wasn't to know.

‘Yeah, OK. Pick me up at about six. You know where I live, don't you?'

‘I should do. It is only a couple of streets away from me.'

Liam left the supermarket to go and tell Jemma the outcome of his visit.
She'd be so pleased. She'd be able to get her own back on that
two-timing boyfriend of hers and Britney at the same time.

‘Well, done,' Jemma said to Liam after he had arrived at her house to
tell her how he had got on after talking to Britney.

‘So, what happens now?' Liam asked, Looking at Jemma and wondering what
she was going to say next.

‘Go on the date with her, of course. What else do you expect to happen
next?'

‘I wanted to go out with her when I was in school. I never had the
chance. Now I have, it is only to wind her up to get at that boyfriend
of yours.'

‘Excuse me, but he is my former boyfriend. You don't think I am going to
go out with him again after he has been cheating on me, do you?'

‘How should I know. I'm not a mind reader.'

The night of the date came. Liam was nervous. What had Jemma got him
into? He started to regret ever walking into that supermarket. He felt
like staying at home and not turning up. But he knew what Jemma was
like - she'd be having a go at him. She'd never let the subject drop.
Why did she have to be so vindictive?

Liam got himself ready to make his way to the cinema. Jemma had already
been on to her friend Claire to phone Darren to say that Brtiney was
meeting someone else at the cinema, but she didn't tell him it was
Liam.

‘Hi,' Liam said when Britney arrived at the entrance, where he was
waiting for her.

But then, who came around the corner to surprise them? Darren, but on
seeing Liam, he backed off. Liam had a reputation, and only the brave
would attempt to have a go at him. Then Jemma arrived.

‘Not frightened to have a go at Liam, are you, Darren? Not only are you
a two-timing rat, but you are also a coward as well.'

Darren never answered. He didn't stay around long enough to answer, but
to Jemma's surprise, Britney actually went after Darren, shouting his
name as she did.

Jemma and Liam stared at each other, amazed. They then started to make
their way towards home, but making their way, Liam said:

‘Hey, Jem, can I ask you something?'

‘What?'

‘Are you allowed to go out with your cousin? I mean, like on a date?.

‘Yeah, I think so. Why?'

‘Fancy going to the cinema?'

Jemma never answered. She just grabbed Liam by the arm and led him back
towards the place they had just left.

When they got inside, she said:

‘It doesn't matter, anyway. We are distant cousins. Once or twice
removed. Well, something like that.'

‘That's all right then,' he said as they reached the box office. Then he
added, ‘Oh, by the way, I've got no money on me. You will have to pay
for us to get in!'

Jemma just smiled to herself as she went to get some money out of her
purse.
