the shop. Justine couldn't wait to meet him and the next day, there
they were - the two business partners by the door talking just as
Justine was about to walk into the shop. But her face began to turn
white with shock, especially when she heard one of the business
partners say:

‘What the Dickens is she doing here? I want her out of this shop
immediately!'

Justine didn't hang around long enough for a confrontation. She knew
when she wasn't wanted, so she turned and hurried away.

Days later, she heard a knock at her door. She was so upset that she
didn't want to talk to anyone, but whoever was knocking was persistent.
They even shouted through the letterbox, and when Justine recognised
the voice, she unlatched the door.

‘Can I come in?' the lady asked Justine. ‘I've got your wages here.'

Justine took the money, then burst into tears.

‘I really wanted that job,' she said to the lady. ‘I worked so hard. How
was I to know that the other business partner was my former boss from
the factory? I was so horrible to him. I don't blame him for sacking me
from the factory. I was such a terrible person.'

‘It's OK, love. He told me all about it. But I managed to tell him how
hard you had been working. And guess what?'

‘What?'

‘I managed to get you a reference from both the partners.'

‘Have you?'

‘Yes. And I have managed to find you a job?'

‘Yeah, course you have.'

‘Honest. You start on Monday. My son and his wife need a full-time
housekeeper and I recommended you. They have agreed to you working for
them.'

Justine couldn't believe her luck. She even went back to the shop to
thank her former boss. He finished up by giving her a big smile and
wishing her luck.

Walking away from the shop she stared at the sky and thought to herself
- somebody up there likes me!
