Bingo, they had found the reward notice. Next day, Emma made her way to the man's house, knocked on the door, then said to him when he answered: ‘I think this belongs to you.' He took the dog off her. ‘Where did you find him?' ‘On the street. He looked lost. I phoned my friend and she told me about the missing dog advert displayed in the post office window.' ‘Thank you so much. I'm really grateful. Hang on, do I know you?' ‘I think you interviewed me for a job last week.' ‘Did you get it?' ‘You didn't actually get back in touch with me.' ‘Do you still want it?' ‘Yes please. You interviewed my friend as well, Stacy. She never heard if she had got the job either.' ‘Oh, don't worry about that. You are both hired. Start on Monday. Have the receptionist show you both to my office at eight-thirty sharp.' ‘He fell for it,' she later told Stacy. We've got to report to his office at eight-thirty Monday morning.' ‘I can't believe it, Em'. I never thought it would work.' ‘Well, it has, and we are now employed. But I can't help feeling guilty about taking the dog.' ‘He was well looked after. It was not as though we were cruel to him. My sister's friend fed him well. The dog ain't exactly going to split on us, is he?' ‘I Suppose you are right. Come on, let's go for a celebratory pizza.' ‘Are you payin? Cos I'm skint.' ‘Course I am.' When the Monday came, they both reported to the receptionist at the factory. They were told to knock on the owner's door and enter. Once inside, both were told about the jobs they had been given and who to report to, but making her way to the supervisor, Emma was feeling guilty about kidnapping the dog, so she headed back to the office. ‘I've a confession to make,' she said to the owner once she had been told to enter his office. ‘You took the dog,' he said to her. ‘How did you know?' Two girls fitting the description of you and your friend were seen taking the dog.' ‘And you still gave us the jobs?' ‘I'm an old softie at heart, and you did look after him, but since you seem to like dogs, I've another job for you.' ‘What's that?' You can come over my house at the weekends to take him for a walk. My usual dog walker is off because of illness.' Emma wasn't happy, but she soon changed her mind, when she met this boy while in the park with the dog, and he asked her out. They say that crime doesn't pay, but it did in this case.
