Finally, the morning of the judging day, Sally rose late and set a pot of unpeeled tomatoes on a stove before getting dressed. While in the shower, she smelled something burning. She hadn't paid any attention to the part about stirring the damned things. Well, the hell with it, she thought, opening a can of tomato sauce. Later, she mixed in dried herbs and old spices, putting together her submission. Joanna stayed up late the night before, simmering peeled fresh tomatoes down to a sauce, so that it could sit all night and blend flavors. She did things right, using a secret cookbook she kept locked up in a drawer in her bedroom. Of course Joanna won. “Now why the hell didn't I win this year, Tammy?” Sally complained. “I put a lot of work into it.” “I guess Joanna's just born lucky,” Tammy replied, turning away to shake her head.
