Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “ I'm Liza,” she said. “Nice to meet you Miss Liza.” “No, just Liza,” she smiled at him. “Liza” he affirmed. “Where are we going?” She nodded toward the horizon. This satisfied him and he settled back in his seat. An hour later they arrived at a burned out house. The barn nearby was in good shape but a couple of rails had fallen down from the corral. There was a tightness in Liza but she kept going forward. The boy sensed her tenseness and asked “Where are we?” She steered the team toward the barn and spoke, “The farmer that lived here was a good man and he raised good crops. There was a boy too. He liked to raise things in his own garden.” “Where are they now?” He asked her. “Gone,” she answered. They came around the corner of the barn and stopped in front of a pumpkin patch. Rising out of the middle was a giant pumpkin, easily surpassing the one the boy had raised. “I knew it,” she whispered, eyes shining in happiness. “Gosh'm mighty, Liza! Look at the size of that!” the boy cried. “It's yours,” she told him “if you want it.” He jumped down and ran over to it whooping. As she watched him she was able, briefly, to imagine Bobby in a place that knew only such happiness. She felt as if a lifeline had been thrown by someone. She turned the team around and when he jumped back into the wagon his eyes were sparkling. “My name's Johnny, and I sure am glad we're neighbors, Liza!” “Me too, Johnny,” she whispered. She cleared her throat then repeated more firmly, “Me too.” Tweet
