Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “Yeah,” said David, after the pause, “Go on, go on.” “Well, you all know Festus wasn't much educated... neither was his mother, it turns out. Those birds got themselves a high dollar lawyer... ” “Matt,” insisted Doc, “Are you gonna tell us or not?” . “Yeah. I'll tell you.” He took the glass that the bartender had set in front of him and emptied it in one gulp. Then he threw the glass with such fury that it smashed through a front window. “I'll tell you,” he repeated. “They walked. Every last one of them. They oughta be a'hangin from a rope, and they walked. The law can't touch ‘em... When Festus' mother wrote out his birth paper, she left out the first ‘s'. So it read ‘Fetus Haggen'... saw it with my own eyes... as good a friend as I ever had... as good a deputy as I ever had... as good a soul as I've ever known.” He looked around the table – around the room. “You know that,” he demanded. “You all know that.” Nodding heads agreed. He continued, “As good a soul as any of us ever knew... but he was a Fetus, not a Festus, so there's no law agin taking his life.” His words trailed off – lost in the smoke. Tweet
