Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story creaking in the door of 447 and found her way to a high backed stool half way along the polished bar soon after the last of the noisy lunch crowed had cleared out. Just as in all her previous visits, she was carefully groomed with not a hair out of place, her cheeks shown a faint glow indicating she had gone to a lot of bother putting on cosmetic foundation. Her lips though wrinkled and shrunken were done in a dark red that perfectly matched the eyes of the large gecko lizard pin on her left lapel. The enamel green pin was otherwise almost invisible on her Kelly green jacket and would have been so but for its' large shinning ruby eyes. She called across the bar to Charlie “I think today I will have a grasshopper to drink and young man would you be so kind as to give me a glass of water with ice as well”. Charlie echoed her order with a note of sarcasm in his voice indicating he had again failed to get any advance clue as to what her order might be. He turned away and began preparing the cocktail. Charlie mixed the drink with all the customary care and professional flourish I had come to admire then carefully sat the green potion on a folded cocktail napkin in front of me. With a discreet movement of his, head he indicated I should pass the cocktail and water to Aunt. It was at this moment I knew Charlie had given up on his quest for the Aunt Order Grail. I carefully carried the vivid green mixed drink and a tall tumbler of ice water and sat them on drink napkins in front of Aunt. Then Charlie got this astonished look on his face and with a sharp intake of breath shouted, “I got it by damn I got it”. The little ladies eye grew large with fright when Charlie let out the yell. He was jumping up and down as though he had just won the lottery. “I got it by damn I got it! I remember now you came in with a black suit and ordered a Black Russian and that day you were wearing a rose colored suit you ordered a rosé wine and the gold dress called for a Gold Cadillac. You're off white paint suit got me to mixing a white Russian. I remember the time you ordered Plum Brandy I was digging around in the back room for ten minutes because you had on that purple outfit; I get it now you can't fool me anymore. You are drinking something that will complement the color of your outfit”. Aunt smiled sweetly then demurely sipped a tiny bit of her grasshopper and lightly touched her gecko pin. Tweet
