enjoyed a hearty breakfast, while she hovered nearby.

At last, wiping her hands carefully on a less than tidy apron,

she presented us with a slip of paper and disappeared into a back room.

Holmes sat, quite relaxed, for some time, enjoying the scene beyond the

windows, before picking up the slip.

With a puzzled expression, he tossed it to me. Merry Christmas, Mr.
Holmes Second of four

There was no signature affixed. Nor was there a charge. “Watson, the
mystery deepens,' Holmes said quietly.

With no prospects of adventure looming before us, we headed back to 221B
to occupy ourselves through what appeared to be a dull day henceforth.

When we arrived, Mrs. Hudson handed Holmes a note which she said had
been given her by a most attractive woman.

‘This evening , after the final performance, I shall drop by to see you'
Though he studied the paper in his thorough manner,

Holmes could find no clue to the writer.

“We'll have to wait for our visitor to show up, apparently, Watson.” The
afternoon dragged on into evening, fog again swirling lazily in the
cooling air,

when we heard a hansom draw up with a clatter to our entrance.

Holmes was at the window immediately.

“Good heavens”, he gasped, growing visibly paler.

“Watson,” he managed to say, “it's ...............” A brief rap at the
door cut him off.

Opened quickly, the doorway revealed a rather stunning, older woman who
stood smiling at him.

“Am I to come in, Mr. Holmes?”

“Irene Adler..Irene Adler', Holmes repeated several times. he seemed to
be dazed.

“I never thought I'd see you again.”

“I've brought you something”, the woman smiled , holding out a folded
note.

Hardly able to take his eyes from his old adversary, Holmes accepted the
note.

While she took a seat, he read it.

‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Holmes Third of four.

“You!”, Holmes almost shouted. I would never have guessed it.

You went to America. I still have your picture – you shall not have it.”

At that precise moment, a melodious singing voice floated from the
street below

to reach our ears.

Merry Christmas, Mr. Holmes Fourth of four

We both rushed to the window, nearly colliding, only to see a black
hansom just pulling away.

A hand was waving from the compartment as it left.

When we turned back, our visitor stood peeling off make-up, a man in
woman's attire.

“She did it again, Mr. Holmes.

She put one over on you. She's quite a woman, my wife.

Not only a gifted musician and actress – did you recognize the boy with
the telegram

- the old waitress – but a clever, clever woman.

She thought my skill as a female impersonator would be a crowning touch.

I should have invited you to my final show tonight before we head back
to the States.

What a pity.” With a look of sincere sympathy, the man was gone.

Holmes looked the part of a beaten man, for only the second time in his
life.

We chose not to discuss the matter thereafter, but I saw that her
picture was placed

more prominently on the mantel following the episode.
