wrong. A sigh, a painting, the encyclopedia Britannica open at the 
definition of time travel, were set aside for Grandfather to tell how 
he could hear the cries of the warriors fallen at Flodden Field or 
Bannockburn, being lost on the fells during a blizzard and how, were it 
not for his two dogs keeping him warm, he says, would surely have 
perished among those warrior cries. But Grandfather was a cripple since 
childhood. The only place he ventured, risking life and limb, was the 
rarely charted territory of Grandma's kitchen. I was eating a freshly 
baked oatmeal biscuit when he shoved himself through the door and 
sitting there in momentary bewilderment. Grandma reassured him. “Henry, 
you're lost, darling.” He wheeled about. 

Grandfather never actually completed a story on paper. Like all
storytellers he followed his visions down every tunnel, chasing all 
forms of love and understanding, stalking boundless ideas, exhausting 
himself in every verbal sense of the word. The man was a walking ideas 
giant. 

My mother insists that I have been infected by Grandfather's
storytelling, which is quite true, and why I like to write my lies 
down, pass them on in the hope you'll see what I saw, feel what I felt. 
 To lie in such a way is almost heavenly, to romance, it is a gift, and 
used in the right context can bring much joy. Thinking up lies is not 
so difficult, I believe what I write...today I wrote, ‘Whenever I hear 
a story, or listen to one being read, I can forget everything of my 
life and live over the scenes.'
