A boy plays with a puppy who he cares for very much, then they are separated by a senseless crime. | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story both the physical and emotional pleasure of petting such a willing and eager puppy on that particularly soft and sensitive spot behind her ear. But these people are all afraid to admit such desires to anyone for fear of how others like themselves will react. So they try to hide their real feelings by making a very loud and public spectacle of condemning this boy for what he has done. And a large number of them, that speaker included, are even afraid to admit these feelings to themselves. So they sooth and submerge their pain, along with a whole lot of jealousy and bitterness, hiding it all from their own consciousness, beneath a seething, distracting, indignant rage at anyone like this boy who does not deprive himself as they do. One of the five grabs the puppy and rips her from the arms of the person who risked his life for her. The puppy yelps and whimpers in confusion and fear. She struggles against the unwelcome grasp of those unfamiliar and forceful, calloused, insensitive hands, but is powerless to escape them. The other four grab the boy and drag him to his feet. They rough him up a bit and throw him into the shell of an old refrigerator that has been abandoned nearby. They slam the door on him, laughing maliciously as the latch clicks shut, trapping him inside. They all gather around the puppy and pet her, tentatively, being very careful to keep their hands well away from her left ear. They all make sure to look like they do not enjoy petting her too much. All five of them say things to the puppy about how she is safe now, and how that horrible boy will never abuse her like that again. They act like they care about her very, very much. A vague and half-formed notion that these people who claim to be so very concerned for the welfare of puppies really care about the satisfaction that they derive from vilifying and persecuting this boy for how he lets a puppy play with him, which enables them to believe that they are somehow caring for her while, indirectly, but very effectively, they subjugate her affection and tickles to the resentful, perverted will of their own jealous hearts, pops unexpectedly into the mind of the one who first laid hands on her against her will. That faint notion grows stronger and clearer. It almost becomes the realization that enforcing their law that dictates who she can tickle in certain ways on certain days actually matters more to them than trying to comprehend and do whatever truly is best for this particular puppy. The consciousness of this person teeters precariously on the edge of understanding why they choose to enforce such a law, without any real concern for how much it hurts the puppy, obstinately, and quite selfishly, refusing to even acknowledge the possibility that doing so will not actually protect her from any genuine harm but ultimately just break her heart and wreck her life. With a quick shake of the head this unpleasant fragment of a thought is flung back, unexamined, into unconsciousness. These people are satisfied with what they have done, so they put the puppy down and walk away. They leave her traumatized, in a state of acute anxiety and distress. She hears muffled screams coming from the large, white, rusty container, but cannot find any way to reach the boy imprisoned inside. His cries get quieter, and she becomes increasingly distraught. She howls in desperate grief and misery. The assailants who robbed her of the tender, comforting, utterly delightful company of her best friend hear her haunting, mournful expression of the terrible anguish that they have inflicted upon her, and think that it could not possibly be anything but evidence of just how badly that boy hurt the puppy. They continue on their way without a second thought. The puppy scratches frantically, and hopelessly, breaking her nails and bloodying her paws in a futile attempt to free the boy who dared to show her such affection, who shared with her so many moments of pure happiness and cared for her so much better than anyone else ever will, from the metal box in which he is entombed.
