Scilla couldn't stop thinking about the gold in her pocket. She might
even be richer than the Massa. She would buy the freedom of all the
slaves in their row if there was enough. Someday, Mamas everywhere
would be naming their girls after her!

The day dragged on for Scilla, but Mamm could feel the sun moving across
the sky far too quickly.

At the end of the workday, they walked back to their shack, Scilla
plucking the violets from her hair as they walked. When they got to the
shack Papa was already washing up and Mamm started fixing dinner. All
three were quiet throughout dinner, lost in their thoughts; Mamm and
Papa exchanging glances over the candle.

After dinner Papa sat Scilla on his lap and brushed her hair lovingly.
After a while he hugged her tight and sent her off to bed where she
soon fell asleep.

At the table, Mamm's face shone in the candle light as tears, long held
inside, coursed down her cheeks. She and her husband clasped hands on
the rough table.

Mamm closed her eyes and whispered “Oh Lord, I know Scilla got to be
sold away tomorrow. Please give her to a good massa and protect her
like she one of your angels.”

Before long Mamm rose and went to kiss Scilla goodnight. Seeing the
bulge in her apron she reached in and pulled out the purse. Opening
it, she tilted it toward the candle light and peered inside. A handful
of violets, already starting to wilt, lent their sweet odor to the
mildewing leather purse. Mamm tucked it back into Scilla's pocket,
kissed her and blew out the candle.
