This story is about the battle within the self; battle between the heart and the mind; the will and the conscience; right and wrong; what you need and what you want; but more importantly it is about love.

was the man for her. Janet had perfected the art of putting on masks.
Behind her tough exterior, the no nonsense intellectual, lay a
passionate heart, a fragile balance that could easily be titled over, a
huge fear of being hurt and rejection and as she looked at him, the
ache in her heart for him, his whole being, threatened to spill over.
But the mask was too well fitting. He didn't notice.

The fire had burned too brightly. It had threatened to consume her and
Janet had fled. She remembered, with a mixture of pain and pleasure,
his kiss. Finally, ying and yang had become one. He had said he loved
her, she was not sure of his feelings. It had been four months, no
communication. Time, she thought, had healed the pain. She reached for
her phone and dialled his number. “Hi,” she had simply said. A
surprised, happy, loving voice had answered on the other end. A
silence, that spoke volumes, of the agony of their separation, of the
love burning in their hearts, of their fears, ensued. “Meet me for
coffee,” she said, her voice husky with emotion. “Where?” He asked.
Ying and yang are inseparable, so were they. She let go of her fears,
her reservations, her morals (he was still committed) and she abandoned
herself, body, heart and mind to him. He didn't disappoint her. He
matched her kiss for kiss, smile for smile, passion for passion and
they built their own world, just the two of them.

Janet was high. Never before had she been loved and had she loved like
this. He infiltrated all her senses, filled her up and he was part of
her now. He drove her crazy and her world was complete. “Be careful
Janet, he is not free to love you,” her friends warned. But they were
destined for each other. She knew, he knew. They were different like
day and night, but they connected, it was a match made in heaven and
nothing in the world, absolutely nothing, could keep them apart.

“I would like to talk to you,” he had said after returning from his soul
searching journey. That was three weeks ago. She had dropped everything
and met him. The minute their eyes met, she had known. Her heart had
started breaking. It had been her greatest nightmare, and it was
getting fulfilled right in front of her eyes. “I can't do this anymore,
I am committed to someone else and I can't break her heart. I love you,
but I love her too, I love her more and ...” his voice had trailed. The
walls were caving in; no, it was an avalanche, and she was trapped,
helpless on its destined path; no, it was a hurricane, and it had
sucked her in and was tossing her up, down, left, right; no, it was
hell and she was right in the middle of it.

The ever faithful mask came in. “Please, don't trouble yourself trying
to say more. I understand perfectly, and it may sound as a shock, but I
was also thinking the same thing, telepathy I guess,” she lied to him
for the first time. She leaned forward and gave him a light goodbye
peck and left.

The tears had dried and Janet lay exhausted, resigned on her wet pillow.
She glanced at her phone. It was two am. She drifted to sleep.

Five years. She had given up on ever mending her broken heart. But she
had found the strength to live. Occasionally, her mind took her back to
those days, those days when ying and yang had existed. She stepped on
the brakes, but too late, she had rammed into the car in front. “Today
is not my day,” she thought, as she got out of her car ready to face
the wrath of the angry motorist whose car she had ruined. She lifted
her head, it couldn't be, those eyes, no, this was not happening, that
face, the smile, could it be? Ying and yang? Inseparable?
