Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story sacked. But, Joe Barnes was tough. He never complained. He was, however, grateful when his broken ribs eventually healed. Joe searched his mind for a more pleasant memory. Ashley Simms came to mind. Ashley had been beautiful and popular. Joe had matured physically by his senior year in high school and was considered by many to be reasonably handsome. Joe smiled as he remembered Ashley. They began dating early in their senior year. Those were the happiest days of Joe's life. Everything was perfect, until homecoming. “I'm sorry Joe,” Ashley said over the telephone. “You do understand don't you. I'm still your girl. It's just that I'm homecoming queen and Mitchell is homecoming king and, well – I mean we have to go to the homecoming dance together, don't we?” “Sure,” Joe managed to say. “Oh Joe, you're the greatest,” Ashley replied with a little too much excitement. “I'll see ya there.” “Yeah, sure.” Ashley Simms was Mitchell England's girl from that night on. In fact, they were married just after High School. Joe frowned. “I have been in Mitchell England's shadow too long,” he thought. Junior High, High School and now at Montgomery state bank. Then, a feral smile crossed his face. “No more,” he said aloud without realizing it. Joe Barnes had a plan. He already had a job lined up at a large Dallas bank. He couldn't wait to turn in his vacation request and then see the look on Mitchell's face when he also turned in his two week's notice. He also wished he could see the look on Mitchell's face when he saw the little surprise he would leave. Joe took a deep breath and knocked on the door. “Yeah,” Mitchell growled without looking up. “I have to turn this in to you. It's a vacation request. You have to sign –“ “Ha,” Mitchell grunted. “The day I need you to tell me how to do my job is the day I'm brain-dead, Barnes.” He grabbed the request and signed it and then said, “There now get out of here and get some work done. And try not to mess things up too much.” Joe remained silent as usual. He turned to leave and then remembered the other notice. “I'm supposed to give this to you.” “Then put it on the desk and get out,” Mitchell said without looking up. Joe was briefly disappointed he wouldn't see Mitchell's face when he saw the resignation notice. He quickly switched his thoughts to the rest of the plan. His feral smile returned. He was sure Mitchell had not seen the note Joe had placed on his desk along with his two week's notice. Joe chuckled as he thought of the words on the note. “I know your secret. Soon everyone will know.” He was observant enough to know that Mitchell England was not a faithful husband. It made him angry that he treated Ashley that way. Joe had no intentions of letting anyone else know about Mitchell's indiscretions. He couldn't do that to Ashley. He did, however, take pleasure knowing that Mitchell England did not know this. Joe did not hear about what happened for almost a month. He hung up the phone and stared at nothing in particular. He had been talking to one of his sisters in Montgomery. She had just told him that Mitchell England had committed suicide. It seems he shot himself in his office. He left a note which said, “I'm sorry.” There was no mention of the note Joe had left. An investigation had revealed that Mitchell had been embezzling money from the bank. Joe put his hands in his hands and sobbed. “It was a joke, he cried. Just a joke...” Tweet
