let somethin' out of that mirror, do you? I mean, it is just what did
Gregory call it? Um, an urban legend, right?"

Now it was Anna's turn to be quiet and when she did speak, it was in a
tone full of fear, "I think there might have been somethin' in that
mirror. Somethin' that is now out and is huntin', huntin' us. Perhaps
we should tell someone?"

"Who? Who would believe that somethin' bad was released from a mirror?
Nobody even believed the mirror was really real, much less that it
really contained somethin'. I think we should go talk to the others,
see what they think," she announced and her sister agreed with her.

When they reached Cordelia's, she was practically throwing a fit, "Oh my
gawd, did you guys see that? Those people were killed just like the
Kdowskis did, well sort of. I think we did somethin' bad and I think
they're gonna kill us too."

Jenny put a hand to her lips and gestured to their younger brothers,
"Don't think we should be talking about it in front of them."

"Why? They were a part of too. They're in jest as much danger as we
are, perhaps more cause they're so helpless," she was now crying.

"We are not helpless," Max blurted and Will nodded his head
enthusiastically but Jenny wondered, how helpless were they all? What
could they possibly do to protect themselves?

By the end of the day, they'd found out that everyone had very similar
dreams the night before. All, except for Florence and Gregory, who'd
they had found out were not home to even talk to.

Of course, Rooster had an opinion about that, "Maybe they're really the
killers. We're sittin' here, gettin' all upset when it's really them.
I mean, they were a little weird and I could see Gregory drinkin'
someone's blood."

"Oh come on, you don't really think that?" Krista scoffed and he glared
at her, "Why not? They're freaky, they're new, and these murders just
started up. Who else would do them?"

"The people from our dreams," Anna suggested and once more he scoffed.

However, Jenny had some say before he could speak again, "It couldn't
have been them. I heard the maid tell them that their parents were
leaving and they could go stay at the hotel for the night. They said
yes. So, they was with their parents. I think it was the people from
our dreams, if they are people. I think they're bad, really bad and
that they're not gonna stop killin' unless we find a way to put them
back in the mirror."

"That's silly," Rooster stubbornly laughed but no one else protested. It
just sounded too right to be wrong. After all their theories were put
on the table and the only one that did sound right was that they
released something from the mirror, they decided to go home. By this
time, the sun had set.

Rebecca rode towards her home, feeling very nervous after her
conversation with her friends. What if they were right? What if the
frightening girl from her dream was hunting her right now? At that
thought, she braked and looked behind her. There was no one there and
she gave a sigh of relief. She was being silly, that was all. There
was no one following her.

Then in the still night, she heard someone whisper, "Rebecca." Panic
ripped through her and she began peddling as fast as she could.
Terrified, she looked over her shoulder, sure that now someone would be
there. Of course, the road was empty except for her. Then her bike
tire caught on something and she flipped forward.

She lay on the dirt, trying to catch her breath and hoping that her knee
wasn't as scraped up as it felt. Then she rose and looked about, there
was still no one and now she was within eye sight of her house. Maybe
she imagined the whisper, it was almost certain she had. Afraid she
was wrong, she looked at her knee and gave a groan at the nasty scrape
that was there. Then she picked up her bike and began limping towards
her house.

Even with her wheels squeaking and her breath heavy, the footsteps were
still loud enough to catch her attention. Fearfully, she looked back
and this time, there were two young men sauntering towards her. Her
pace picked up and so did their's. She looked again over her shoulder
and the distance had shortened.

Terrified now, she turned forward to run and stopped short. There was a
girl with beautiful blonde hair curled around her head and blue eyes
that glowed in the night. The girl opened her mouth in a radiant smile
that revealed two fangs overlapping the perfect teeth, "Hi."

Rebecca screamed and dropped her bike. She turned to run but the two
boys had been joined by a whole bunch of other people and while she'd
been distracted by the girl, they had surrounded her. Suppressing
another scream she turned to face the girl and she was grabbed roughly
from behind. She struggled furiosly but they were too strong. One of
them grabbed her head and forced it sideways so that her neck was
exposed.

"You are so giving me what's mine," the girl chuckled and then bit down
into her throat. Rebecca's scream echoed through the night but no one,
who could help, heard.

Will was riding his bike ahead with Rooster and Anna in the middle,
quietly talking to themselves. Jenny rode behind deep in thought,
falling further behind but not noticing. Suddenly, her chain snapped
and her bike was rendered useless. At this point, her siblings were
too far ahead to call so she just began walking her bike alone. She
wasn't that far from home so it wasn't a big deal.

Still lost in her own thoughts, she was stunned when she almost ran into
a tall boy about her age. He had dark brown spiked hair, eyes so dark
they were almost black, and pale skin. Wearing all black, he blended
in with the night so it wasn't hard to imagine why she almost hit him.

"I'm sorry," she mumbled then realized that she'd never seen him before,
"Who are you? Are you new to these parts?"

"No, I've been around for a very long time," he replied, his voice husky
and enticing.

Her thoughts were reeling at a hundred miles an hour, what if this young
man was one of the killers? "A long time? That's funny, I've never
seen you before."

"Of course not, but I came looking for help," he looked around
fearfully, causing her to do so as well. What was he scared of?

"For help? What kind of help?" she questioned, wishing that her siblings
hadn't got so far ahead of her.

The young man held his head then looked at her pleadingly, "Any kind of
help. They must be stopped, this wasn't what I wanted. I don't think
it's what they wanted either. Do you know how to kill souls?"

"What?" she blurted, her heart seeming to stop in her chest. Had he
really just asked her how to kill souls?

"I know this sounds crazy, I still have a hard time with it, but there
are some bad beings loose in Sunshine Valley. They were souls trapped
in a mirror by a satanic ritual and someone released them. Now they've
got to kill those that released them so they're free and I want to stop
them. Do you think I sound crazy?" he begged to know but she didn't
answer, just sat down in the dirt. Everything she had feared was true,
they were in big trouble.

"No, you don't and I have no idea how to stop them," then something
occurred to her, "How do you know all about this?"

The boy gave a heavy sigh before responding, "I was trapped in that
mirror too but I'm not like them. I don't want to kill and destroy,
all I ever wanted was to be happy. My mother did this, she started it
but she'll never allow it to end."

"Your mother?" quickly putting two and two together, she blurted, "Why
then, you're Mikel?!" Stunned, he stared at her and nodded his head.
"So, you're not like them, which means you're not going to kill me for
helping release you?"

"You helped?" his eyes flashed fear, "That's not good. I wouldn't kill
you or the young man I'm supposed to, but whoever shares the life force
with you. They'll kill you, unless we can stop them. My mother told
me that one of the only ways to stop them is self sacrifice. One of
the releasers must kill themselves in a selfless act to try to stop
them but that's a lot to ask of anyone. Will you help me to find
another way?"

"Of course I will, we have to find someway, I don't want my friends to
die," she blurted. They moved off the main road and into the growth on
the side so that his comrades wouldn't stumble upon them, then he told
her the tale of his mother.

His mother and father had found an ancient family book describing how
they could attain immortality through the dark arts. Finding young
teenagers who were interested in living forever, they had formed a cult
where the children had willingly offered their lives in the search.
His mother had believed the number needed was twelve, but she had
misinterpreted, which was how Christoph was able to kill her. However,
Christoph had misinterpreted too.

The immortal life was only offered to those trapped within the mirror,
the unlucky thirteen. Only once they had been released by thirteen
others, could they begin the life they hoped for. The thirteen that
released them had the life force that would make them not just hungry
souls but humans again. They would have to drink the blood of their
victims to survive until they killed their life force by drinking their
blood. Until they did kill their life force, they were vulnerable to
death by sunlight, stakes, and decapitation. Of course, they would
never truly be invulnerable to sunlight. It wouldn't kill them but it
would cause some serious pain as night is the time of the devil and
they were forever tied to him.

Mikel had been unwittingly trapped in the mirror and didn't want the
gift of eternal life. He just wanted to live a normal life but he
didn't believe it was possible. The mirror destroyed everything it
touched and it had it's grip firm upon his soul. He could no sooner
flee its curse than he could go back twenty years and live again.

Jenny listened to his tale and felt herself deeply touched by the broken
boy who sat before her. His dark brown eyes glittered with tears as he
spoke and she felt herself moved to place a hand over his.

"I will do everything I can to help you," she promised, even though she
didn't believe it meant much. What could she do? It wasn't like she
had the strength or capability to hunt down each of the vampires and
kill them herself but that was an idea.

"What if we were to hunt them down and kill them one by one? You know,
stakes and decapitation and such?" she questioned, knowing it was a lot
of work but better than being a sitting duck.

Mikel laughed, "How would you do it one by one? They're rarely ever
alone, I'm the exception and it would be very difficult for a human to
sneak up on them. I can't do it because we can't kill each other.
That's just like some decree or something. So, how would you do it?"

"I don't know, I'm just trying," she knew she sounded exasparated but
she was. She was trying to come up with ideas and he was shooting her
down with laughter.

"Sorry, I appreciate the idea. It is a good one just it won't work.
There's gotta be something that will take them all out at once," he
shrugged his shoulders, "I just don't know what it is."

"I'm sorry too, I just wish I could help you more. I gotta go though
and catch up to my brothers and sister before they get worried. Um,
you can only come out at night, huh? Well, how about I meet you here
tomorrow around seven and we'll try to figure somethin' out? Okay?"
she asked hopefully and he nodded with his eyes full of sorrow. She
gave his hand a reassuring squeeze then grabbed her bike, and began the
trek back home.

Her thoughts were on the handsome young man who wasn't really alive but
he wasn't dead either. What a life! To have your parents and your
girlfriend betray and murder you so that they could have a life of
immortality. It just didn't seem right and she vowed to help set them
back in place for him.

When she finally reached home, her family was in an uproar. They'd
received a call from Rebecca's parents, she didn't come home. When
they went to search for her, they'd found her body on the side of the
road. She'd been drained of blood and symbols had been inscribed upon
her. Jenny and her siblings were not to leave the house after dark,
if at all, and if they saw anything funny, they were supposed to tell
Pa right away.

Anna pulled her aside, "I know this is because of what we did with that
mirror. We've got to figure a way to undo it."

"I met one of them," Jenny whispered, "He told me that his mother said
the only way to stop them was for one of us to kill ourselves trying to
stop them. He seemed like he was telling the truth."

"One of them? What do you mean one of them?" Anna hissed, digging her
nails painfully into her shoulder.

"We released thirteen souls from that mirror, thirteen vampires. Mikel
was the son that was murdered but he's not like them. He's not, he
doesn't kill and he wants to stop them," she was almost in tears at her
sister's grip.

"Is that why it took so long for you to get home? You were talking with
someone who claimed to be a vampire?" she shook her and the tears
spilled over her cheeks.

Rooster came striding over, "What's going on besides one of our close
friends just died?" Jenny began to bawl, not only for Rebecca but
because how many more of her friends would die before they were able to
stop the monsters?

"This is all you're fault. If you hadn't challenged that city boy, we'd
never released them. She claims that there were vampires in the mirror
and we released them," Anna jabbed a finger into Rooster's chest then
added, "I believe her too but that also means her way of stopping them
is almost as costly as lettin' them run loose."

Rooster looked very confused so Jenny relayed all that Mikel had told
her then he spoke, "Well, why not destroy the mirror? It seems like
the source of all their power so if it's gone, what do they have?" His
sisters looked at him, dumbfounded, why hadn't they thought of that?
All of a sudden, she could hardly wait to see Mikel again and run that
idea past him. However, it would be a while before she saw him again
so in the meantime, she was going to bed to mourn for her deceased
friend.
