Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “Hello? Smith residence. Reese speaking.” I said. There was no answer. “Hello?” I asked again. Click. The other end of the line was cut off. My jaw dropped. I turned my head, looked at Cait, and slowly put the phone down. “Ree? Who was that? What's wrong? Ree?” Cait kept asking worriedly. “I-“ I started to say. “I don't know. The other end was cut.” I finished saying. Then the phone rang again. I looked at Cait and backed away from the phone. I was beginning to freak out. Cait looked at me, raised one of her eyebrows, rolled her eyes, then picked up the phone. “Hello?” Cait asked. “Yeah, hang on a second.” Cait said. She turned to me and whispered, “It's Mrs. Canton.” I smiled. Mrs. Canton is our next door neighbor. She's in her late forties. I usually babysit her seven year old twins. “Hey, Mrs. Canton.” I said. “Reese, is everything okay at your house. I noticed that all the lights we out for a few minutes. I was getting worried.” She said. “Everything is okay now. Caitlin and I walked downstairs to see what was wrong and when we got here the lights just went back on. It was weird. But we got two flashlights so if it happens again we have some light.” I said into the phone as I was beginning to calm down. “Okay. If it happens again give me a call and you two and come over here. Your parents told me to watch after you. So all you need to do is pick up the phone and give me a call and I'll be over in a minute to pick you up. You can come over now if you want to.” She said. I looked at Cait and told Mrs. Canton, “I think we'll be fine, now. But thanks Mrs. Canton. I'll make sure to give you a call if we get too scared.” “Okay, then. I better go. Julie is getting into the cupcakes. Bye, girls.” She exclaimed as something in her house feel. “Bye, Mrs. Canton.” I said as I was putting down the phone. I turned to Caitlin and began to laugh. Maybe she just tried earlier. That's all. I mean, everything is fine. Right? Oh how wrong I was. I looked at the back room's door and seen it still closed tightly. I turned to Cait and said, “Let's get going upstairs. I want another milkshake.” We walked up the steps. The next time we would return down here, would begin the scariest days of our lives. Tweet
