Our love burned with an abandoned and reckless passion that threatened to consume us whole. For sanity’s sake, we decided to just remain friends, something that probably won’t last long, especially since I think I’m falling for his twin brother. (Second | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “Oh, haven't we heard that a million times,” Lolita scoffed chucking a grape at my head. “I bet you'll be back together by next week,” Nick commented nonchalantly, his head tilted back as he took a long drag from his cigarette. “Some friends you all are. Where is the encouragement, the faith, the support? Does anybody believe me?” I asked, my words colored with exasperation. Jack, Nick, and Lolita purposefully avoided my gaze, leaving me with the only two in the group that had yet contribute to the conversation. I stared at the entangled bodies Skye and Will and wrinkled my nose as both continued their hot and heavy actions without regard for the rest of us. Then again, I couldn't say anything, because we all knew that compared to what Dev and I used to do in front an audience, their activities would be stamped with a PG rating. Sad, isn't, it? Just as I was about to give up on having any chance getting an answer out of the couple, Will held up three digits for all of two seconds before his hand wandered beneath Skye's shirt. “Three days Will? And here I was thinking that you'd take my side after all that we've been through.” “It sucks to be wrong doesn't it?” Devin said with a dry smile from his stretched out position on the ground, his face a bit too close to my thigh for my liking. Had I an inanimate object of no importance, I would have gladly flung it at his gigantic, ego-inflated head. Instead I settled for edging away, just in case he got any ideas while he was down there, not that I would have any complaints while in the throes of pleasure, but better to be safe than sorry. “Fine, you all say that now, but just you wait. I'm going to get a boyfriend and show you all how wrong you are.” “So anyway,” Lolita began completely discounting a remark that had she had probably deemed preposterous due to lack of conviction, “about that test for Cooper, does anybody have the notes? I haven't been to that class in decades.” “I've got them right here.” Jack tossed her a folder. “Wow,” she cocked a brow. “You actually paid attention in class? I'm impressed.” The star quarterback let out a deep, rumbling laugh. “Yeah right. I got it from that mousy chick that sits in the front. You thought I was taking notes? That's rich.” He laughed again at the ludicrousness of the notion. I pouted, feeling the slightest bit of injustice of it all. Bitches, the lot of them. Maybe it was time for me to hang out with a new crowd. There was that recent opening on the math team...Oh yeah. I could picture myself now wearing their trademark blue blazers and khaki shorts with a pencil permanently attached to my ear and a TI-84 in my back pocket. “Don't worry angelcakes,” Devin said in a voice only for my ears while stroking my thigh, his eyes silver speckles against a backdrop of midnight blue as he stared into my soul, “I will always support you, no matter how asinine the idea may be.” My heart melted on the spot and I made a valiant struggle drop all of my defenses and sink into his arms like I'd done so many times before. I love him. I really do. He was still my number one advocate even though we weren't together and I knew he would always be. Our bond was that strong. Scary, I know. It felt like our lives and souls were so wholly enmeshed that I didn't know where he stopped and I began. But this is why we needed to keep our distance. We had fallen so hard so fast that I hadn't had time to figure out what I really wanted and who I really was aside from Devin's girlfriend. My chest heaving with indecision, I leaned down and placed a chaste kiss on his forehead, wordlessly thanking him for saying what I needed to hear. A thin smile appeared on his lips, but it held no humor. Instead, he let down his guard for a second and gave me a glimpse of how much this arrangement was hurting him. Ripples of pain and sorrow surfaced in the depths of twin pools of silver and blue. His gaze was so raw with unsaid emotion that I felt tears gather behind my eyes, the organs in my stomach twisting uncomfortably. I wanted so badly erase his misery, to take him in my arms and tell him that everything was going to be alright like I had done in the past. I knew he had enough problems in his life with a dysfunctional family that was borderline crazy and burdening him with our breakup was the last thing that he needed. But lying wouldn't do nothing but create more heartache. I ran my fingers through his sleek, obsidian locks, their texture that of the finest of silk. He sighed, his eyelids drooping until his thick lashes kissed his cheek. I smiled. He loved it when I played with his hair, saying that it alleviated his stress and put him in a hypnotic state. I didn't mind since once in a while I would catch him drooling, and then could tease him about it. What would people say if they caught wind that badboy O'Connell drooled like a baby? Social anarchy would ensue. “Angela!” Wide-eyed, I glanced up at my name. “What?” “Why am I not surprised that you haven't heard a word I've said?” Lolita spoke with a crooked grin and a knowing look as she nodded toward the boy dozing by my side, his cheek pressed against my leg, his breathing even. “God you two make such a beautiful couple. Your kids would've been so gorgeous. What a waste of perfect genes.” She clicked her tongue and shook her head. “Anyway, I have two ideas for Friday. Since the parentals will be away for the weekend, do we want to throw a party or hang out?” “Party!” Growling, Jack took his empty Pepsi can and crushed it against his temple in an impressive however inane display of masculinity. Ugh, men. “A party would imply that we have means to supply such a function and may I be so bold as to point out none of us have the capability to scrounge together enough money to fund this event on such short notice,” Nick duly pointed out stubbing out the remainder of his cancer stick into the dirt. “And might I also call attention to that none of us have jobs and obtaining money would all depend on the disposition of our respective parents and how much they're willing to provide.” I hid a grin while processing his line of reasoning. There was no doubt in my mind that our genius in disguise was going to make it big one day. “Though I'd love to chill out this weekend, I'm kind of in a party mood. When was the last good party that we went to?” I paused for a second to let them ruminate on my words and continued when they supplied no answers. “And we've been hanging out for the past three weekends. I'm ready to cut loose and get drunk out of my ass, especially since mid terms are coming up and that's guaranteed to stress us all out. Am I right or am I right?” “Hell yeah!” Was Jack's exuberant reply. “And where would we get the money?” Nick asked, his calculating, cerulean eyes piercing my own. “We can use a credit card to buy the liquor and kegs, and then charge people at the door for compensation.” “And who, pray tell, would pay to get into a party?” he retorted with a cynical edge. A sly grin spread across my face. “Why, the freshmeat and the sophomores of course. They'd do anything to get into an exclusive party. We'll tell them to show up early, take their cash, and then by the time our friends come through we'll be done collecting.” A ghost of a smile graced his features. “Sweet plan. Count me in.” “All right!” Lolita clapped her hands and grinned. “What do you think? Will? Skye? Devin?” Finally coming up for air, the flushed couple broke apart, panting heavily as they fell on their backs side by side. “Hello? Can I get an answer?” Skye flipped her off and continued to catch her breath. “I'll take that as a yes.” Twisting back, the dark haired girl reached for her book bag and pulled out a black planner. “Ok, so I'll get some of the girls on the squad to spread the word. Jack you do the same with the jv football team. Nick and Will, you're in charge of the alcohol, and please none of that cheap whiskey. You know the last time Sydney vomited all over my mother's couch after three shots. Skye and Angie, you'll come by Friday afternoon and help me move around the furniture and pack away the valuables. And Dev, you can tell all of your little groupies. I know they'll be ecstatic since you're on the market again.” I stiffened, her last comment ricocheting off of every corner of my mind and taunting me of what would never be again. That's right. Devin was no longer mine. I looked down, my heart wrenching in my chest. He was beautiful. Black hair splayed haphazardly along my thigh, the corners of his perfect, full lips upturned serenely in his nap, his soft snores occasionally licking at my skin. Sighing, I rubbed the back of his neck where hairline met the smooth, expanse of his neck. Girls would give up their first born sons for a chance to be with him. And who was I to stop them? We weren't together. I didn't hold the right to beat the crap out of his groupies for flirting with him anymore. The thought struck a cord within me. We were finally two separate entities. So long DevAngie; hello Angela Celine Robinson. The sounding of the bell abruptly jolted me out of my musings and officially ended our lunch period. “Let's go to the movies,” Skye suddenly proposed upon returning to the real world, a broad smile extending across her cherub face. “I second that motion,” Jack raised his hand. “Cool.” Lolita came to her feet and brushed off the grass particles that insisted on clinging to her skirt. “I'll bring my car around to the back of the cafeteria and pick you all up there, unless someone else wants to drive too. Do you want to take half Angie?” “I'm going to class,” I said gathering my belongings and standing. “Some of us actually want to get an education.” “That's such bullshit G, and you know it,” Will drawled lazily, one eye closed and the other fixed on me. “Come to the movies with us.” “There's nothing I want to see.” “Who said anything about seeing?” Skye slanted a wicked look over to her longtime boyfriend, who returned the insinuating gesture unabashedly. Young love was so overrated and slightly irritating. Is this how people felt when they were around Dev and I? “I think I'll pass.” Especially given that I had no one to make out with and watching these two go at it like rabbits would only deepen the longing I had for a love that was taboo. “We're going to class,” Devin stated, not suggested, as he arose. His word, as always, was final. Gods I loved an authoritative guy. What a turn on, right? “Aww, you guys are no fun,” the blonde sulked crossing her arms. “Don't worry; I'm sure you'll have just as good a time in the janitor's closet,” Nick snickered ambling back toward the building. “Just be sure to watch out for any bodily fluids from DevAngie's last coupling.” Everyone laughed as heat crept up my cheeks and lit them with a fiery blush that I'm sure turned my face an unpleasant shade of fire engine red. Thank you Nick, ever the constant source of sardonic entertainment. “Don't worry,” Devin reassured the pair with a nefarious smirk and snaked an arm around my waist, “I cleaned up all of our juices from the last time. You're good to go.” “Ew, Dev.” I slapped his chest and stared at my sandaled feet, hoping my red face would die down soon. “I didn't hear you complaining,” he replied with a cocked brow, a teasing glint flashing in his eyes. Touché. “Can we please go to class now?” I mumbled evading his amused gaze. Laughing quietly, he drew me closer, took my bag from my hands and slung it over his shoulder. “Whatever you say babe.” One hour and thirty minutes later I found myself sitting in the last class of the day. Chemistry with Mrs. Bonnie L. Thompson, otherwise known as BLT, was not one of my favorite pastimes. Bearing in mind that I didn't know what she was talking about eighty percent of the time, the woman was in love with the sound of own her own voice, making it hard for everyone to comprehend what the hell she was saying. Often she would go off on incoherent tangents that had nothing to do with the structure and composition of atoms. How are the excellent reviews she received for a Broadway script she wrote years ago relevant to chemistry? The world may never know. But needless to say, I was regretting that I had opted to forego the chance to squander my money on a cliché movie that didn't pertain to the realities of real life. “Come home with me after practice.” I aimed a well-deserved glare at the dark-haired Adonis sitting in the desk next to me. “Must we do this every hour on the hour?” Devin didn't respond right away with a sexual innuendo that would have undoubtedly brought about another blushing frenzy. Solemnity shadowed his face, blue-silver eyes uncharacteristically empty of emotion. My annoyance fell as quickly as it had risen. “What's wrong?” “Julius.” My mouth dropped open in surprise for a moment, the simply, one-worded answer causing a chain reaction of emotion within me. Happiness that I would get to see a friend that was only around once in a blue moon, guilt because I shouldn't be so delighted to see someone who my ex-boyfriend hated to the very core of his being, then anger because the fault lay in the hands of one man, their father, who had intentionally set two brothers against each other. I instinctively reached out and touched his forearm. “I'll go.” Relief swept through me as he relaxed in his seat. I really did hate to see him so depressed, so unlike his usual go get ‘em personality. “Thanks angelcakes,” he shot me a watered down version of his sexy, I-can-have-any-girl-I-want-with-a-snap-of-my-manicured-fingers grin, and I wasn't surprised when it had the same effect as its predecessor. I waited until my heart resumed beating rhythmically and my butterflies discontinued with their fluttering in my stomach before winking at him and returning my attention to the plump, frizzy haired chemistry teacher up front. Sighing, I stared at the clock carelessly ticking on the space above the chalkboard, the long hand taking its sweet time moving from one numeral to the next. It was going to be a long afternoon.
