"Only the true of heart shall know the magic of the crystal dove..." | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story show the merchant the cloth sack with the crystal dove. Gregory offered the merchant one wish for a price. "Business has been slow.", said the merchant,"I'm not sure I should take the chance." "Your merchant shop shall thrive, believe me. With the magical powers of the crystal dove, you will get your money back ten times over!", Gregory promised. "I have heard rumors about the magical powers of the crystal dove, but I'm not sure I believe it.", the merchant said. The merchant finally agreed . Gregory set the cloth sack on the threshold of the merchant's shop. The sack soon glowed with a strange light. It became brighter and brighter. Villagers, curious about the light, wandered over to the shop. The merchant, meanwhile, was setting out his finest wares for his potential customers. Luck was with the merchant's business because with the help of the crystal dove's magical powers, he enjoyed a booming business day. Gregory went from shop to shop tricking the locals into believing they could get rich, he collected their money. He could not understand why he felt so empty. He just could not shake off the dream that he had about Marina and the crystal dove. His guilt forced him to make a decision. He could not break the heart of a sweet little girl and any money that he collected so far he would give to the glass maker, but it was too late. Neighbor turned against neighbor and greed took over as the good fortune turned sour. Gregory did not consider the villager's own greed . He thought he was the only one who wanted money . An angry crowd spotted him and wanted the crystal dove for themselves. The greedy villagers fought over the crystal dove until the early morning hours. The fog was thick and the villagers could not see who they were fighting. Far away, a light could be seen and Gregory and the villagers followed it. As they grew closer to the light, they heard the sound of someone crying. The villagers felt compassion for the little girl's cries and stopped fighting. The light was the crystal dove guiding them to Marina. Just like in the dream. The dream was really a message for him to change his old ways. Gregory wanted to keep hope alive for Marina--the only true heart that made him see that happiness is the true treasure in life. Marina, along with the magical crystal dove, believed that hope could move mountains and could be the "magic" cure that could turn around a whole village. @2004 Kathryn Gabrielle Tweet
