“I did it because you love me and won't say it.”

“Am not . . . and you scared the frogs.”

“I don't care about your dumb ol' frogs . . . I'm going back.”

Sue Ellen turned, leaned forward and started back up the bank. Tommy
stood, brushed off the seat of his pants and followed. They didn't talk
on the cow path or when they ducked through the fence. Sue Ellen lead
the way past the pump house and didn't stop by the backsteps. Tommy
said see ya . . . she didn't answer, but walked down the lane. At the
road she turned toward town and peeked over her shoulder. Tommy waved
as her head spun back ahead.

Tommy trudged up the backsteps and plopped down on the top one.

“Back already?” his mother asked through the screen door.

“Sue scared the frogs off . . . it don't matter much. We just throw ‘em
back.” Tommy turned his head and looked up. “Mom, do you think I'm in
love with Sue Ellen?”

“I don't think so . . . it's kind of early for that, too.”

Tommy looked down at his white feet. “Can I go barefoot tomorrow?”

His mother looked away and smiled. “We'll see . . .”
