although I had never felt that before. The work has been strenuous.
There is one last thing to do.

With only one shot left in the revolver, there is no chance to miss.
Wait! I have to tell my husband. I'll write him a note. Of course, I
killed him, didn't I? Still, one should tell some one. I'll write a
note anyway. Why did I bury myself under the floorboards? There seems
no point now that it's nearly all over.

I hold the revolver to my head. My hands are still shaking. I have
never done this before. Of course I haven't. I never will again.

Unless...

I pull the trigger. But it is not so reassuring now. My head is
exploding. Exploding like a volcano erupting. I know that is so, but
I can't feel it. I fall once again to the floor.

**********************************************

I am back in that curious room. But I am not alone. Emma is here. She
looks more beautiful now than ever. She is looking at me, and her
smile is tyrannical. It is inviting, radiant as the Sun... To coin a
phrase.

I love Emma. And I know she loves me. When you will kill and let
yourself be killed, all down to one person, no matter who they are, you
know you love them.

We are advancing towards each other, but we both stop. Something, an
invisible hand, is pulling us back. No! I have to see Emma!

But that voice is starting again. The soundless voice I have come to
fear yet trust.

Do you want to go back...?

No!

I could never leave Emma. Our life was turmoil, but we can have the
perfect death. Together. We are alone in our room. This place is
nothing to fear. It is paradise.

And the mysterious being has gone.

THE END
