What starts out as an innocent hangout with friends ends with a transformation that will forever rule my life. I have no choice but to follow the path that has been lain before me, the path of blood.

enough to stimulate my feet into moving upon their own freewill, then I
heard the revolting gurgling noises that meant Rod wasn't going to make
it. I bolted from the tunnel, not sure where I was running, not sure if
I could run fast enough.

Behind me, I heard the soft thud of a once dear friend's body hitting
the sandy ground of the playground. Then the footsteps, a deadly sound
that even without straining, I could hear almost as well as the sound
of my own pouding heartbeat. My breath seemed to constrict within my
chest, allowing no oxygen, killing me before my hunter would ever be
able to reach me. But I could have only been so lucky.

Something grabbed me around the waist, and I was immediately cloaked in
a scent of cloves covering an underlying smell that I knew all too well
to be that of death. I began to scream as Rod had, for what other
choice did I have? I had no desire to die, but if I should keep my
silence, my death would go unnoticed and would be used to aid in the
murder of more of my friends.

That was when the teeth sank into my throat with an burning ache that
sent lances of lightning to every nerve in my body. I arched at the
torture and let loose a piercing shriek, but the teeth ripped free, and
dug in again for another bite. Carefully, almost lovingly, I was placed
upon the ground, as whatever beast continued to gorge itself upon my
flesh and blood. Dying in the floral smell of my own body and the
addictive scent of smoke, beautiful and enticing, but murderous
nonetheless.

It was a virus that was passed along by saliva, I was dead and aware of
this fact. For what I considered my soul, the concious mind, still
dwelt in my body. I could feel the virus infecting my carcus, changing
it into some atrocity that had existed in what I had believed to be
only my fantasies. Like millions of ants dancing upon my flesh, I could
feel it working busily at the transformation, the most activity focused
upon my the death wounds on my neck. I wondered if Rod was suffering
the same fate as I or if by some small miracle, he had been spared.

The change took some time, my cells being destroyed by whatever bug
filtered through my deceased body, and I didn't realize how much time
until I felt the first rays of sunlight in the distant east.

Immediatly, I wondered what barbaric creature had designed such agony
from merely light. Fire seemed to dance across my skin, igniting nerves
I'd never been aware of. Then I realized, if I were feeling, then my
new body was alive. With a concious effort, I strove to only open my
mouth, and after a few failed attempts, I was rewarded with the
movement. I felt as if the world had just opened up for me. Until I was
bitterly reminded of what could happen to me if I didn't start moving
faster by the continous burning sensation. With a strength that would
have once died in me, I rose to my feet, shaking with the effort
needed.

Even though I had never moved from the spot, panic ripped through me as
I forgot where I was... where I needed to go to escape my assured doom.
Instinct awoke my memory and I knew only that I had to get to one of
the houses. I took off at a speed that I'd never believed possible. It
was as if everything in life had frozen but I, and I knew if a living
person had been with me, they never would have seen me move, perhaps
wouldn't have even sensed a movement. Though, even with my speed, I
sensed someone keeping up with me. I glanced over my shoulder and was
thrilled to see Rod, except he wasn't the same Rod I had known. He too,
had undergone the change, there was a darkness in his face, a shadow
that hadn't dwelled there before.

Upon reaching the first house, I didn't bother to check the door,
rather, I flew over the wall with a leap that could have put me easily
on the roof and shattered a side window. I paused for only a second,
waiting for the shrill scream of an alarm, but luckily for us, there
was nothing. I dove through the broken glass, ignoring the momentary
flashes of pain from the sharp edges, for they were nothing compared to
the constant cry of the sun burning upon my skin. The room was dark but
I could see perfectly the emptiness of the room. My heart did a leap of
joy, luck was with us, this was a house vacant of occupants, who had
opted to sell it's comfort rather than enjoy it. It was a perfect place
for Rod and I to sleep away the hellish glare of the day, though in
this room where the sun's rays were still visible creeping across the
morning sky. We fled into a hallway closet, where tucked together, our
bodies cool in their close aproximity, we fell asleep to dream of the
nightmares we had become.

There was a circle of others like us, fangs revealing in snarling
smiles. Their eyes, cold and malicious, were not staring at us, but
rather, upon the sky. I followed their gaze and saw nothing but
thunderclouds rolling darkly about. I glanced over at Rod, and he
shrugged his shoulders. What was going on?

Suddenly, a handsome man in what appeared to be his mid-twenties, ran up
and shrieked hysterically, 'It's a trap! It's a goddamn bloody trap!'
The creature nearest to him turned with a look that could have turned
him to stone, and promptly smacked him across the face with enough
force to knock him to the ground. He rose back up with blood trickling
from his nose and an expression of furious contempt. The fire in his
face was directed at not just his attacker, but the entire circle.

'You stay and it is no fault of mine. The elders are your destruction,'
he spat, angrily swiping the blood away. His eyes flickered to the
streak upon his hand, as if tempted to taste it, though aware that this
was not the place to pull such tricks. Almost as if to deny his want,
he stuck his hand behind his back, pretending that such thoughts had
not crossed his mind.

'Watch your tongue. Without the elders, you would not exist,' a girl,
who looked no older than thirteen, growled. There was something in her
voice and eyes that suggested she was much older than appearances
betrayed. Her innocent facade of a child covered a huntress with years
of cunning under her belt. She was not to be messed with.

'With the elders, we will not exist,' he insisted, though angry with the
group, still troubling himself to try to save their lives. The man who
had smacked him stepped threateningly towards him, and with no further
warnings, he bolted away. As if his departure had set something off,
there was a sudden clap of thunder. I jumped at the momentous crack
that sent chills down my spine, it was the signal of devious storm. The
circle smiled eerily and opened their arms in glorified anticipation.
There was a brilliant arch of blue light, and two of the beings were
consumed by fire. The reverance turned into screams of fear and agony.
In desperate futility, the creatures attempted to escape, but the light
picked them off one by one.

Rod and I stood there, holding hands for comfort, watcing the horrific
scene. I was as astonished as revolted by what I was viewing, and by
the tears wavering in his eyes, I knew Rod was also touched. We were
unconcerned about our own welfare, for somehow, we knew we were in no
danger.

Suddenly, I awoke, no longer in a place smelling of burning flesh and
echoing with the cries of the damned. Instead, I was in a closet,
cuddled against Rod, who I realized with a start was watching me. The
look on his face was unfamiliar and intense, both scaring and exciting
me. I couldn't help but smile at him and he returned a boyish grin that
reminded me of the crush I had upon him.

A sharp pang of ravenous hunger pierced my belly, making me gasp and
double over. Strong hands steadied me on my shoulders, helping me
regain my balance. I looked back at him, trying to shield the pain in
my eyes, but he saw it nonetheless. 'Hungry?' I nodded and he added,
'Me too.' So, we untangled and crept out of the closet, prepared to
throw ourselves inshould by chance there be any vicious rays of sun
searching for us. Once we got in view of a window, we were relieved to
find the cool comfort of the night flooding in.

'Thank god,' Rod whispered then covered his mouth, finally announcing,
'I'm not sure he's accept thanks from us. Not after this.' His face was
so serious but his voice was full of dripping mockery and it was all I
could do to keep from laughing. Not that I really understood why I was
trying not to laugh. We weren't going to be awakening any occupants in
the vacant house, maybe it was the fact I had died and risen in the
form of a monster that allowed for no laughing or humor. I snuck a
glance at him only to see his rich, brown eyes waiting to catch me in
this moment. I froze and a smile teased the corners of his lips, then
he clutched his stomach as an audible growl from it issued.

'Hmmm, you're hungry too. We'd better find something,' the nature of
this comment struck a nerve in my mind. We were going to go hunting,
what was wrong with this picture? I didn't hunt, in fact, I'd been
animately against hunting, but here I was, planning on preying on the
most elusive creature of all, man. I had no thoughts of decieving
myself that I would try to eat an animal or just take some blood, I was
going to suck my first victim dry, perhaps because I lacked blood
myself at the current moment. Whatever the reason, I didn't pretend
that I was going to spare whoever I should catch, they were going to
die. I knew it and when I looked Rod, his eyes gave away to his shared
knowledge. Slipping out of the broken window, one stanza came to mind,
the hunt was on.
