Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story into the snow bank and rush back to the car. The man loses his balance but gets up from the snow bank and runs after the two men just as they are opening the car door. He raises his shovel up in the air to hit one of the men, but the two men wrestle him to the snow covered ground and take the shovel away. One of the men hits the man over the head with the shovel several times. Blood covers the snow and the man's limp body twitches uncontrollably. The woman gets out of the car and bends down over the man. It is hard to tell what she is doing. She opens her mouth to what looks like a silent scream, but one of the men puts his hand over her mouth and look around. She feels his pulse and puts her head to his heart. She looks to the one man and shakes her head. Their gestures are animated and they point to the parking space, the man and the car. Finally, the one man puts his hands on the other man's shoulders and both men start moving. One of the men takes the man by the feet and drag him to the back of the car. The other opens the trunk and puts him inside, closing it quickly. They go back to the parking space and attempt to cover up the evidence as best they can. Satisfied that no one else saw or heard anything, the one man opens the door but looks up and sees the woman in the window watching the whole scene. He gets in the car and takes off. A few hours later, another set of headlights comes down the road. It is the woman returning home from her job at the diner. She approaches the house and sees a parking space shoveled out for her and she smiles. Her constant torch in the storm has kept a place for her. She gets out of the car and looks for the man who is always there for her. He is nowhere to be seen. She goes into the house and turns on several lights. She sees the woman venturing through the house searching for her husband. Opening the front door, the woman returns to her car. She examines the parking space. Turning over the snow, she sees traces of blood. Her face turns white. Falling to her knees, she puts her hands over her face and her body shakes. The woman's face appears wet with tears. Her eyes widen as she spots the woman in the window watching. Their eyes lock as if one look can answer all the woman's questions. She crosses the street and knocks on her door. The woman in the window knows. Tweet
