His heart began to beat a little faster though as he noticed some worrying signs such as the nervous expressions of the Doctors around him and the amount of sweat that they constantly wiped from their faces. He began to realise that maybe he had gotten himself into something a little dangerous here but before he could voice any concerns on that subject he was put to sleep. The experiment was about to begin. Doctor Burke stood over the sleeping form and trembled with excitement as he held the syringe in his hand. This would be the pinnacle of his already distinguished careers work. Despite his excitement however he managed to speak calmly to his comrades. “We have been waiting for this moment for a long time gentleman. We are about to make history here today. Here's to the future”. As he bent to administer the injection a young and nervous Doctor called Shippley spoke out. “Doctor Burke, we need more time to test the effects of these drugs before we use them on a human subject. It is highly dangerous. Remember three weeks ago the mouse who physically became much older immediately after being injected?” We only let him under the influence of Maxcolenethol for twenty seconds. We all saw the change in him occurring before our very eyes. We still did not find out why that happened and now you are using a human being for Christ's sake. We also don't even know where they go to under the influence of the drug. It could be to different universes or just plain hallucinations for all we know. This is madness Doctor. Please reconsider using this man as a subject until we have fully explored the properties of the drug and tested more extensively on animals. We are not ready for this yet”. Doctor Burke still held the hypodermic needle filled with dark blue Maxcolenethol and was now injecting Brian on his left arm. “Yes Doctor Shippley”, he spoke without turning around as if he had existed such an outburst from the young Doctor. “We have all heard your sermons before. We have a chance here to change human history forever and I think that it is worth the risk to proceed with this so let us do just that. Doctor Inoue will you please tell me when the two minutes are up and I will inject our patient with Thersolacane ending the experiment. Are we all ready? Good”. And so it began. Brian awoke feeling extremely groggy and very sick. With a struggle he managed to slowly open his eyes to see where he was. When his eyes had regained focus and adjusted to the light or rather the lack of light he let out a scream of terror. When he awoke again two minutes later he was still screaming. The seven Doctors in the room were very disturbed by his reaction to whatever had happened and had him sedated immediately. Doctor Johnson was mumbling something about the level of Maxcolenethol that Brian had been given and Doctor Burke was trying to calm everyone else down which took quite a while. Brian eventually gave them this story after he had sufficiently recovered. “Waking up there initially was like finally getting your head above water after an eternity and finally being able to breathe but I felt really sick straight away. It was the most unnatural sensation to experience and I can't describe it very well at the moment. I had a thumping headache and a weird feeling that I could float but I was actually lying down somewhere dark. I was outside and it was night because I could see the stars high above me but they were not constellations I recognised. It was so cold there. When I was fully awake I immediately got a horrible feeling all through my body that I wasn't alone there. Wherever there was. There was something there with me even though I couldn't see. Many things in fact surrounding me in the dark and they weren't any things that I had ever seen before as I realised when my eyes had finally adjusted to the darkness. As this happened I began to see them moving. They moved so fast but at the same time there was something wrong with them. They seemed somehow unsymmetrical and deformed and they radiated a malice that reached me strongly through the darkness. Whatever they were I knew instinctively that they were deadly. They were predators and they were aware of me but didn't know whether I was a threat or not so they moved closer to me all the time with a gruesome and patient purpose. As they approached I could see their eyes clearly for the first time. They were dead eyes. That is the only way I can think of to describe them. The creatures were also transparent because I could actually see through them as they closed in on me. It's possible that they can assume different shapes or maybe disappear altogether as this appeared to happen before me but I was becoming hysterical and may have imagined it. At any rate they are highly evolved creatures. Then the pain in my stomach became unbearable and I vomited. The next thing I remember is waking up here surrounded by all of you. I think those things would have killed me if you hadn't brought me back”. None of the Doctors spoke for a long time after these words. They did not know what to make of Brian's story. “Where was I?” he finally asked them. “Where did you send me?” “We sent you to the future just like we told you we would”, spoke Doctor Burke in a patronising tone. “That was not the future of this world”, replied Brian passionately. “That was somewhere else. The stars and those horrible creatures were not of our world”. “I think we will use a higher concentration of Maxcolene the next time”, Doctor Burke said almost to himself, not even listening to Brian any more. “That might do the trick”. Brian laughed in his face. “If you think I am ever doing that again your mistaken buddy”, he shouted rising to his feet. “Fuck you, fuck your experiment and fuck your $5000”, he screamed and turned to leave the room determined to go home and forget his horrible experience here with these quacks. They were crazy. The whole fucking thing was crazy but he was the craziest one of all for having been taken in by those nuts. Doctor Burke did not look in the least upset at Brian's words. In fact he started to smile as Brian reached the door. “I knew you would react this way after the first time. Its only natural and so I had to take special precautions,” he said. “By the way Brian how are you feeling right now?” “I will be fine just as long as I never have to see your face again”, Brian replied vehemently but he realised that he was actually feeling a little hot and dizzy. The room quickly began to spin right in front of his eyes and in an instant he was sprawled unconscious on the floor and was being dragged back to the bed by Doctor Inoue and Doctor Bennett. “All right”, Doctor Burke said happily clapping his hands, “Lets try this again”. In less than five minutes he again stood over Brian holding a hypodermic needle but this time the needle contained three times the level of Maxcolenethol than it had the first time. Even Doctor Burke knew he was taking a serious risk giving Brian a dosage of that magnitude but the results would be worth it he told himself. The things he will tell us when he returns. How far into the future can we send him? And I will be a legend. Talked about in the same breath as Newton and Einstein forever. “Sweet dreams Brian. Lead us to the future again” he whispered as he administered the injection. This time though it became apparent immediately that something was seriously wrong as Brian began to go into convulsions and foam at the mouth. Blood began pouring forth from his nose and ears. “Bring him back now”, shouted Doctor Shippley taking hold of Doctor Burke and shaking him roughly by the arms. “Not yet you fool”, screamed Doctor Burke pushing Shippley to the floor. “Its too soon”. But it wasn't too soon. It was too late. Brian's heart had just stopped beating. · Brian again felt the weird sensation of coming up through water to the surface and fighting the sickness he felt all over he opened his eyes and looked around him fearing he was back in that horrible place with the scary, evil and dead eyed creatures of before but he was not. He knew immediately that he was somewhere far worse. It was hot. It looked like the most enormous cavern that could possibly have existed. He could barely see the roof and he could not see an end to the cavern in any direction he looked. There was fire everywhere and the intense smell of burning flesh filled his nostrils making him gag. People were screaming in agony and despair all around him. He knew with a sinking feeling that he would soon be one of them. He began to cry but the tears evaporated instantly on his face. There was a feeling here that this place was eternal and he knew that people who came here never left. This was a dead place. There was only eternal suffering for all souls who ended up here. It was torment. It was torture. And it was forever. They had sent him to hell. Tweet
