Madeline announced angrily. "I'll go with you, Madeline. I've been
wanting to explore this grand place myself," Miguel offered. With that
they left the rowdy group behind, and decided to start at the bottom
and work their way back to the top. They talked about practically
everything. Madeline didn't get back to the room until after one in
the morning. She was worried that Jon would be mad, but he wasn't even
there. Madeline went to bed without any thought as to his whereabouts.
He can take care of himself, she thought. As the days went on, Jon and
Madeline drifted further apart. It was mostly because Jon was
constantly with his buddies and left Madeline to fend for her. The
thing about that, though, was that Madeline was never by herself. She
always had Miguel as a companion. Within a week of the continuous
behavior from Jon, Madeline was even more convinced that she didn't
want to marry Jon. She was starting to have feelings for Miguel. She
was on her way to talk to Jon when she ran into Miguel. "Miguel! I
was just on my way--" "To see me?" Miguel asked slyly. "Actually, no.
I was on my way to see Jon." "Madeline, you can't go through with this
marriage." "Why is that, Miguel?" "Because I love you." "That is why I
am going to go talk to Jon. I was going to tell him that I didn't
think that we should get married." "Why?" "Because I love you back. I
can't go and marry someone that I don't love. Promise me that you
won't do anything until I tell Jon." Madeline broke from Miguel's hold
saying, "I should go find him now." "You have two days before the
wedding. You had better tell him or else you'll look like a fool on
your wedding day." Madeline and Miguel did something together each day.
Then the day of the wedding came. Miguel assumed Madeline told Jon
about them and that the wedding was off. Miguel and Madeline were
walking around on the top deck when Jon came up to them. "So, how is
my beautiful bride-to-be? I can't wait until a few more hours. I want
to get married now." "What are you--" Miguel started to say, but was
interrupted by Madeline. "I can't wait either, honey, but it takes
time. You'll just have to wait," Madeline replied quickly. "Well, I'm
going to leave you because it is bad luck to see each other before
we're married." And with that Jon left. "What was that all about?"
Miguel asked. "I didn't get a chance to talk to him. He was always
gone with his buddies. I need to go get ready. See you at the
wedding." Madeline said as she stalked off. The whole time Madeline
was getting ready, she had knots in her stomach. She couldn't believe
she had deceived both the man she thought she loved and the man she
really did love. What am I going to do? she thought. I'm in big
trouble. Madeline headed toward the church in a daze. She didn't know
what was going to happen. She thought about trying to get Jon's
attention, but the wedding was about to start when she got there. The
music started as the wedding party began walking down the aisle.
Finally it was Madeline's turn to go down the aisle. She was fine
until she got to the front and saw Jon. Before the minister was able to
get started, Madeline turned to Jon and said, "I'm sorry." And ran out
of the church. Madeline heard someone calling her name, but she didn't
stop running. A hand touched her shoulder as she reached the railing
outside of the little church. It was Jon. "What is wrong with you?"
"I can't marry you, Jon. I have deceived you. I have fallen in love
with another man," Madeline cried. Jon was about to ask whom she was
with when Miguel came running out. Jon looked at Madeline and said,
"Never mind. You don't have to tell me. I know now." He turned and
punched Miguel square in the jaw. They started fighting and throwing
each other against the walls. The people inside the church heard all
the commotion and came out to see what it was about. Suddenly both men
lost control and fell overboard. A few minutes later, they both
resurfaced, still fighting. Madeline started screaming, but neither
guy heard her. Everyone on the ship saw why Madeline screamed, but
they didn't say anything. Unexpectedly, there was another splash.
Madeline dove into the water and started swimming toward the two guys.
All three of them saw the shark fin, but it was too late to start
swimming. They all disappeared under the water. Then the water turned
calm, but nobody resurfaced. Then two heads broke the surface about
four feet from the ship. Nobody could see who it was, so the captain
threw in the lifeboat and went to get him and/or her. The survivors
were Madeline and Miguel. "What happened out there?" someone inquired.
"The shark must have smelled our blood because we all got attacked.
Madeline and I were able to swim away, but Jon panicked. The shark
attacked and eventually killed Jon. There was nothing we could have
done to save him. I'm sorry." Miguel answered sadly. "Are you guys
okay?" "Yeah we're fine. There is something I would like to do
though," Miguel said kneeling down. "Maddie, will you marry me? Right
now?" This time instead of cringing like she used to, she exclaimed,
"Yes, of course I will!" When the ship finally docked in Florida, Mr.
and Mrs. Marshall said good-bye to their guests and boarded a plane for
their honeymoon in New York. In the end, they decided to stay in New
York because they loved the city so much. Miguel became the head of a
prosperous software company. Maddie became a big name lawyer, and is
currently running for district attorney. She and Miguel live in a
mansion with their three children in Manhattan. As they lived their
lives, nobody spoke of the mistake Maddie almost made. Each day,
Miguel is reminded of the enormous risk he took in order for this life
to happen. He risked his life for love, so Maddie could live a happy
life with the man who loved her back.
