A poem I wrote during the summer and have only just got around to publishing. Warning: contains vivid scenes of cricket which may be unsuitable for some (american) readers. | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story And when we are opposing them its normal to feel tense, They are good and they are talented their partnerships are fierce, And as defenders of the bails they're difficult to pierce, Yet ever and again our bowlers go for gold, Hoping soon to find a way of making the foe fold. The eleven of South Africa come from a far off land, To deliver hard and speeding balls from hard and speeding hand, They play the game with power which few men can oppose, They break like storm a-raging upon the English rose, But we know we can survive them at least that's what we hope, We will the ball gain distance and so traverse the rope. And so with one or other of these great and noble teams, Our English men will strive to realize our dreams, And yet though they do battle they remember what they aught, That every ones a friend in this gentlemanly sport, And everyone is friendly and everyone is free, And near the end of every match they go and share their tea.
