Karla's first few moments in Tokateka, and how she is dealing with the seperation from her best friend. | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story had the urge to leap back in the bubble and head back home but the bubble melted into nothing. She realized that Joyce had arrived in the bubble beside her. “Joyce,” she cried out and ran to her best friend. The face of her best friend was tear streaked and her voice cracked when she said, “Hi. I'm scared, what about you?” “I am definitely worried,” was her reply. A ghostly white woman walked up to them, her bright blue eyes were the only color on her. “You are to walk in and state your name and nationality,” she commanded. “Do you mind my asking your nationality?” Karla was curious for the saleswoman had been the same coloring. “I am a Tokatekan,” she responded haughtingly. Her eyes flashed with pride and her lips twisted into a cruel sneer, “All Tokatekans are proud to have such coloring as mine.” She then walked to the next bubble and left the two friends looking at each other in bewilderment. They began walking towards the castle along with tens on tens of other children ranging from thirteen to twenty-five years old. They pushed through the heavy wood doors. Another tall, pale woman stood with a list in her hands. “What is your name and group of people?” she inquired. “I am Karla Waves and I am water person,” she grinned back. “You are in the WaterHouse, next,” she glanced briefly at her list before looking at Joyce. “Wait a second, is there any way my friend and I can get put together. We're a little. . .” Karla began. “Are you two first years?” the two friends nodded, “That explains it all. You get placed with your kind not with your friends. If you get lost looking for your house, ask the fairy lights and they will show you the way. Now honey, what's your name and group of people?” Karla looked despairingly at Joyce but knew there could be no fight. She began to wander down the hall but had no idea where she was going. What in the world was a fairy light? She then looked at the glass domes clinging to the wall and saw that the light was not solid. It flitted around moved. It dawned on her, fairy lights. “Which way to the WaterHouse?” she asked, feeling slightly foolish. The lights lit up dark blue down the hall and Karla followed them to a great door that was an aquarium. All kinds of fish swum in it and little water plants bobbed up and down at the bottom. “Um, thank you,” Karla grinned and pushed open the door. There were six bunk beds carved into the wall and the bed spread looked like seaweed silk. There was a bubble dome for the roof where giant electric eels paced the distance. There was a magical whale walk in closet. All that was needed to work it was a voice. One had to walk up and politely ask to go in. Occasionally someone was rude and either the whale clamped up or it let the person walk in and then they could not get back out. Karla did not know this yet but she would find out soon enough. There was a door that she assumed led to the bathrooms. There was an area with three large desks and six rolling chairs. Two older girls sat over there discussing a class they were apparently both taking but they looked up when she walked in. “Hi, are you a first year?” the taller one inquired. Karla nodded her head vigorously and grinned sheepishly. “I kind of figured so. I am Celeste Rainriness and I am a seventh year,” she smiled warmly and Karla knew that she was going to like her. “I'm Antoinette Sprinkle and I am also a seventh year. Welcome to the WaterHouse of Tokateka,” the other girl announced. “I am Karla Waves and as we all know, I am a first year,” she laughed. “Well, you are the first, besides us, to arrive,” Celeste explained. “Wow, so do I get my choice of bed?” she wanted to know. “Of course, why do you think we arrive so early?” Antionette wanted to know and the two seventh years laughed hilariously. The door swung open and a stunning water woman walked in. “Hi Jocie,” Celeste waved and Antionette followed suite. “Hey ladies, only one more year after this and I will be a free woman,” the girl's voice was husky, “Oh hi, you must be a first year. Welcome To Tokateka, more importantly to the WaterHouse.” “Hi, and thanks. Yeah, I am a first year. Is it that obvious?” Karla questioned. “No, it's just, well, didn't recognize you so had to make the assumption. Don't worry about meeting any twelfth year water girls, they're all gone. I am the oldest. So, what's your name?” “I'm Karla, Karla Waves.” One by one, the girls filed in and picked their beds. Karla chose a bottom bunk right by the bathroom door. She wasn't a fool and knew how valuable the bathroom was to a teenage girl. She liked Tokateka so far but she wondered how Joyce was faring. Tweet
