This story is kind of an experiment...I was pondering what makes up a person's identity. What can people tell from one's appearance? If someone were to look at me, what could they know about me or my life? Everything written here is true. | |||

The stares and gasps were expected and satisfying, but still a bit daunting. In her few weeks year of school had not yet met anyone she could confidently call a friend, but she was comforted by the smiles that seemed to accompany these reactions and began to forget her new appearance. While waiting for her grandmother to pick her up, she sat at the table designated for first graders, although the title was unspoken. A girl from her class also awaited her ride, and they quickly and easily became friends, as those so young tend to do. Without warning, a tall girl walked slowly towards their table. She was obviously quite a few grades higher, and her long dark brown hair hung over her shoulders. A few others, just as tall, followed close behind her. They stood before the two girls, looking down upon them intimidatingly. Her new friend edged away, observing the situation uneasily. The tall girl pointed and smirked cruelly, but her finger did not point at the friend. It indicated the short hair of the other. "Look at her, it's so stupid, she cut her hair just to look like her friend." The comment was followed by derisive laughter. She hung her head. It was true. Her best friend of a different school had cut her hair boyishly short, and in an effort to be closer to her in every way possible, she had followed suit. The remarks continued, but she did not hear them. Her eyes clenched tight, fighting the tears she knew were already showing plainly on her cheeks. How had the taller girl known that? Why did it matter why she cut her hair? The sneering voices ceased for a moment, and she looked up into their faces with a glare that only weakly masked her pain. Her new friend clasped both her shoulders and guided her away from the tables and into the bathroom. She stared at her tearstained face and fiercely rubbed her eyes, willing the tears to disappear. She narrowed her red eyes. "I will never copy anyone else again." - - - Tweet
