rescuing a puppy ... and finding out how lucky I really am ... | |||
Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story The only problem was ... this lean to, and the puppy, were behind a much bigger fence, one that I couldn't back into and knock down; concrete pillars and rebar, covered in chain link. So, I got one of the hamburger patties and threw it to the puppy. After he ate it, I sat the other pattie down on the ground and walked away from it. The little cuss got it and got back behind the fence before I could catch him. I sat back in my truck contemplating what to do next, when I realized that I had some life savers, the big, individually wrapped wintergreen kind. I took one out, and held it through the chain link fence. The puppy came over and started licking it, I reached through the chain link with two fingers from my other hand and snagged him, I drug him over to the bottom of the fence, pulled the fence out, and got him. On the way down the hill, I passed a black bear coming up. When I got him home, I gave him a bath in the washbasin in the basement. He was filthy, covered in coal dust. He looked pitiful, but fluffy as a feather duster. My wife and daughter instantly fell in love with him. But, I had still decided that we weren't going to keep him. We just didn't have a house for a dog. I knew that once I took him to the pound, he was too cute for someone not to adopt. He slept with my daughter. She cried all night. The next day I took him to the veterinarian. I figured I'd get him checked by a vet before I took him to the pound. I think in my own way I was debating with myself. He WAS a cute little guy, and I love dogs. The vet examined him. He weighed seven pounds, had fleas, ticks, and worms, and was barely ten weeks old. She asked me how I found him, and I told her the story. She got down in his face and said “you're a lucky little dog” and he licked her. And I cried. And I knew right then that I had a dog. Not only that, but the vet named him too. I guess maybe he IS lucky that I found him. But, to tell you the truth, I think I'm the lucky one. Tweet
