Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “I thought I could never let go.” “I didn't want you to. I wanted you to hold me forever.” Her voice trailed away, and he kissed her neck before taking up the story. The candles continued to burn as the wind and snow blew outside. “I held you in my arms at last,” he said, squeezing her a little. “You smelled so good. I was so perfectly happy, holding you. Your cheek was against mine, your breasts against my chest. You pulled back slightly and our eyes met again. I was lost in the shining light of your eyes but you spoke to me... your voice touching my ear for the first time without aid of telephone or speaker. ‘Hello, Alan,' you said, and your beautiful lips curled into a smile. And it was all I could do to choke out ‘Hello, Sarah,' before I leaned forward and covered your mouth with mine. I felt you sigh as our breath mingled, and all I could think, was how I could possibly be happier than I'd been only a moment before. You tasted like tea and mint, smelled of sweet berries, and felt so soft and warm in my arms. I wanted that moment to last forever, to spend the rest of my life holding you in my arms, kissing you. Loving you.” He stopped speaking and listened to her low, even breathing. The baby's soft snores were nearly lost in the sounds of the howling wind. The last candle burnt out with a sputter, plunging the room into total darkness. He laid his head on the pillow, holding her tightly, and went to sleep. Tweet
