Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “Start talking.” He ordered, motioning his own people away from the table. They reluctantly obeyed the order, and left the two of us in semi-privacy. “Tubs, a hit went down a few weeks ago and I need to know who did it. Schillaci’s the name, was hit right outside of the theater downtown.” “What’s it got to do with me?” He asked, wiping his mouth for the first time. “Lots. I’m going to get a huge payoff for this one, and you’ll see whatever part of it I can get you.” “Come on, Waters. No payoff you could possibly bring in would make me want to help you with that kind of information. I want an informant.” “Informant?” “You got friends at the P.D., right? You tell me when they get hot on my business, and we’ll make a deal.” It sounded good enough for now. “Deal. Talk to me, Tubs.” “Schillaci was hit because someone wanted to move in on his business. He owned a nightspot, I forget the name, in some fancy part of town. This club brings in lots of dough, and makes a great front for some other illegal business that I don’t know anything about. Anyway, I heard that someone wanted to move in on it and hired your boys to do the job.” “My boys?” I asked, a little confused. “Big Al and the gang. They were hired to do this, Waters, they didn’t plan it. I don’t know who is behind the whole thing, but they were the middle men. Look for someone to take over this club, and you should have whoever you’re looking for. If you don’t want to do that, try asking your boys.” “They’re not my boys, Tubs, I just owe them a lot of money.” “And now you owe me, Waters, and I get crankier than Big Al ever thought of getting when I don’t get my payoffs.” I knew this was true, and a threat. “I’ll keep you informed. Thanks.” As I walked back toward the large entrance, I thought about the deal that I had just made with Tubs. It wouldn’t be much to get some cheap info and send his way, the police had been doing it for years. The story he had given me, on the other hand, was priceless. I wasn’t sure who was lined up to take over Chaotic Charter, but I was sure it had everything to do with the announcement Schillaci was going to make the next night. Still, I didn’t know why someone had hired Big Al & Co. to kill her off too, unless she intended to run the place on her own. That must be it. I would let her know what I knew, and I was sure she could fill in the blank on who would be next in line to run the joint. Probably some business associate of her husband’s. “Thank you, sir, come back.” The doorman held the large glass open as I walked out into the street, back into the cold, dark, and rainy night. I noticed a patrol car across the street parked in the shadows of an alleyway, probably Chuck. As I stepped into the street to cross over and have a little chat with him, a black sedan cut in front of me. The rear door facing my side of the street flew open and two dark figures jumped out and shoved the barrels of two pistols into my gut. I didn’t recognize the thugs, but I had pretty much everyone on my case lately. They frisked my person, taking the two .38’s and the knife, then stood back. “In the car, right now, or we make a mess of you,” came the deep voice of one of the men. I had no choice but to get in, being shoved in the back and stuffed between them. Damn, and I was just about to call it a night. The two left their pistols in my side the whole ride, which didn’t stray from the abandoned docks area. Not a word was said, and the trip was incredibly quiet except for the rain beating on the windshield and rooftop. To Be Continued Next Week...(If the rating for this part are good) Tweet
