smiled breathlessly, and extended the shoes to Squid Man. She didn’t
look at Joe.

“Theodore, I thought you might want some new shoes. I was out shopping
and I couldn’t help but think of your poor cold toes.”

Joe grinned happily, still riding on the high from Squid Man’s brief
smile that he’d glimpsed earlier. Squid Man didn’t take the shoes, so
Mary placed them gently on his desk, backing carefully away, through
the door into the apartment. Joe followed bouncily, and they clutched
each other’s bodies, each imagining that they were holding their son.

Squid Man touched the shoes, and then pulled back, as if he had touched
something hot. He had no strong feelings about the shoes. He had no
strong feelings about anything, thoughts formed fuzzily in his mind and
never fully developed. But these shoes displeased his eye, and had a
strange feel, which triggered a primal reflexive recoil instinct in his
hand. He gritted his sugary teeth, and grabbed the loafers in one
fist, crushing the balled-up white paper that was crammed inside each
toe. He swung himself onto the balcony railing, his mind not
communicating with him about its intentions. He opened his fist,
sending the shoes kicking and spiraling down the sixteen stories. The
wind pushed them away from his apartment building, to the curb in front
of the well used spire-topped building next door, where they teetered
and fell onto the gutter grate, straining against the iron bars. The
bright, immaculate white of the tissue paper peeked out from the gaping
brown orifices of the loafers. Towards the toe, in the right shoe, on
the crumpled paper, unnoticed by Squid Man, was Mary’s halting,
backwards-slanted handwriting. “I love you, my Teddy Bear.”
