Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story And how that greasy Worm volunteered and how he gave the rest of them the finger when he was safe inside the Falcon's force-field. “But he didn't know I was in the Ship, Corth,” Blaze went on, sniggering, “and I materialized behind him and tapped him on the shoulder and he shot six feet into the air!” Corthan grinned as Blaze rambled on. And then the Falcon had left and what Tyler had really said to Connor and how Muslik knew something like that was going on. “How does he do it, Corth? Is he a telepad?” Corthan laughed and ruffled Blaze's hair again. “Telepath,” he told him. And how Kane had contacted them all one by one and told them about the mission and they had all agreed to go – Muslik, Sinto, Miller, himself and they had to be in the Block for the pick-up five nights from tonight. “Kane says he wants you along, Corth. Will you come? Will you?” Corthan glanced out at the trees and the dark sky before replying. “Perhaps,” he replied eventually. “Where to?” “We don't know,” Blaze answered, frowning. “Tyler wouldn't tell Kane but listen to this, Corth,” he went on, brightening. “If the mission's a success Tyler's going to set us all free after it. Free Corth, to go anywhere we want!” Corthan smiled gently. How could he explain to a fourteen year old boy that freedom meant nothing to him. Instead he asked, “This mission we're going on, what's it about?” Blaze frowned again. “We don't know that either. Nobody knows, not even Kane. He says we're to be told later.” He was quiet for a bit, frowning into the fire then the frown cleared and he said, “What d'you think, Corth? Are you coming with us?” Corthan glanced out at the night again. The rain was heavier, almost obscuring the black trees, the sky above dark. ‘It really doesn't make much difference,' he thought tiredly, ‘whether I go or stay. But Kane seems to want me along. The boy wants me along.' He shrugged and looked back at Blaze. “I'll go,” he said. Blaze jumped up and yelled with delight. He did a little dance round the fire then danced over and hugged Corthan. “Great Corth, great!” he bubbled. “Off Sirene! Wow!” he yelled out into the rain. “Relax,” Corthan said. “Drink your tea.” They drank in silence for a while, looking out at the rain and the night. Blaze started yawning and Corthan took his cup from him. “Get some sleep,” he said. “We leave at dawn.” “Okay,” Blaze said, yawning again. All the dematerializing and passing messages had tired him. He hugged Corthan and made his way to the back of the cave. A minute later his sleepy voice said out of the shadows, “Hey Corth?” “Yes?” “I'm really glad you're coming with us.” Tweet
