Wendy? You seem so troubled."

I nodded sadly as I threw the pieces into the trash can. "Why does Kevin
have to be so cruel, especially to me? I poured my hear into that
picture." Maria understood my anguish. She leaned over and whispered
into my ear," "Kevin is madly jealous of your talents in art, Wendy.
He's seen all the great work you do. The important thing is to not take
this to heart and be the best Windy Wendy you can be." After hearing
this, I started feeling a little better. "Thank you so much for helping
me, Maria. You're the best."

Just then, Mr. Bunsen came into the room. "Miss Kerns, I believe this is
yours." He handed me my notes that I took in class. I was so glad he
found them for me. He continued,' I am glad that you take good notes
during class, but, in the future, take better care of your notes and
not leave them in the strangest of places. Do you understand?" I
nodded, thanked him for finding my notes, and ran to my next class,
knowing that I was late for it.

I had tried to stay hopeful throughout the day, but Kevin and the
Hooligans tormented me over and over again. However, I brightened up
when it was time for the very best part of my day: My Art and Music
Lessons. Today was the day for my Voice Class. Singing is one of my
most favorite things to do. Everyone in my class, including my Voice
teacher, Miss Frieda, consider me a very sweet Vocalist.

As usual, I was the first one to arrive in the Music Room for Voice
Class. To pass the time before the others and Miss Frieda arrived, I
dug out my sheet music from my canvas bag and studied it. Luckily, I
didn't have to wait long. "Hi Windy Wendy!! Early Bird as usual?" I
heard a voice say . I looked up and saw Samantha Peterson, one of my
Voice classmates and friend as well. "You know it, Sam. This songbird
is all warmed up for today's lesson." I replied with a smile. Sam
smiled back and sat in the row behind me.

Soon, all of my other Voice classmates showed up in bunches., sat in
their seats and chatted among themselves. Finally, Miss Frieda walked
into the room, set up her place at the piano, straightened up her sheet
music and turned to face us. She saw how we were still talking to each
other, so she raised her hands and said loudly," Good afternoon, my
fellow Vocalists!"

That got our attention. "Good Afternoon, Miss Frieda!!" My classmates
and I replied. She was pleased, as always, that we easily composed
ourselves. "I'm so glad that everyone could make it today. We have a
lot to accomplish this afternoon. I would like to show you all a new
vocal technique that will be beneficial for you when we begin learning
a new piece today, in addition to the others we've been working on. But
first, let's begin with some warm ups." Miss Frieda explained as she
sat at the piano.

We began with breathing exercises such as breathing in, holding the
breath, and letting it go on a slow "shhhhhh" sound. The, we moved on
to singing scales while Miss Frieda played them on the piano. "Very
good!" she said when we finished," Now we can start singing." Miss
Frieda asked us to turn to the song Amazing Grace in our sheet music. I
was happy because this is one of the songs we work on that I am very
good at, as Miss Frieda had told me before. "let's review our timing
and dynamics. Remember, clear, strong vowel sounds." she instructed and
played the introduction. Soon, we were singing all together as Miss
Frieda has been teaching us.

So far, I was having a joyful, fun filled afternoon, with something I
love to do and no Kevin Snyder around to ruin it. But when we finished
singing Amazing Grace, my heartache came to visit me yet again that
day.

"All right, that was great. Now we can start on our new piece called
When I Give My All. It's a beautiful song that I think you will enjoy
singing. Can I have a volunteer to pass out the sheet music, please?"
Miss Frieda asked us. In our group, a few hands shot up in the air,
including mine. Lucky me, Miss Frieda chose me for the job. As I walked
up to Miss Frieda for the music, I felt a sharp tug on my red skirt.
Then, as I walked further, a loud r-r-r-r-rip came from the skirt. For
some reason, everyone began to laugh. Looking down, I saw why. Somehow,
my skirt got caught on a nail sticking out of a chair in the aisle and
when I walked along, my skirt ripped entirely in several pieces,
revealing my yellow Teddy Bear underpants, underneath my brown tights.

Needless to say, my whole body was weak with grief and embarrassment. I
scrambled to pick up the pieces of my skirt. The class continued
laughing, so Miss Frieda stood up and said loudly," Knock it off,
now!!! You all should be ashamed of yourselves for laughing at Wendy
like that!!!" She gestured for me to follow her and we went into the
Ladies' restroom.

There, Miss Frieda inspected the damage on my skirt while I slipped on a
pair of jeans I got from my locker, fighting back tears, all the while.
Finally, she said," Wendy, your skirt is pretty damaged. But it can be
fixed with a little sewing. If you like, I can fix it for you so you
can wear it." Miss Frieda is such a great teacher , taking care of me
like this. but I replied," Thanks a lot, Miss Frieda, for your offer.
But I think I will let my Grandmother sew it for me. She made that
skirt for me and it's very special to me for that." Miss Frieda nodded
nicely, understanding the skirt's value to me. She also sensed my
lingering sadness and grief. "Don't feel bad, Wendy. You didn't do
anything wrong. Your classmates are just being childish and mean.
Let's get back to the room and finish class for today." With that, I
took my skirt from Miss Frieda and followed her back to the Music
room.

Back in the room, I walked to my seat, doing my best to ignore the
snickers and remarks of " Windy Wendy had an Uh Oh." from my
classmates. Miss Frieda went over some of our new song. I tried my
hardest to focus, but it was hard, especially after my embarrassment.
Before I knew it, our Vocal lessons was over. As quickly as they came,
my classmates left in bunches. I was the last to leave. Before I did,
though, I went over to Miss Frieda.

"Thank you so much for helping me with my skirt. I greatly appreciate
it." She smiled. "That's the least I can do for one of my best Vocal
students. Keep up the good work and I'll see you next week." I told
her I'll see her next week as well and ran to catch the bus home. The
ride home on the bus seemed to take hours, even though it normally only
takes 20 minutes. I guess it's because I was still troubled about my
day. When I got off the bus at the Bus Stop near my house, Samantha was
standing there. "Hi Sam! Are you waiting for the bus here?" I greeted
her. She nodded. "Yes, Windy. I'm waiting for the bus to go to work.
How did it go with you and your skirt? It was so hilarious how it
ripped out of nowhere!!" she replied and started giggling loudly.

After hearing this, I shot her an evil look. "For your information,
Samantha, I ripped my special skirt so badly, that, it needs to be
sewn back together. I'm having a bad day and I don't need you to
belittle me anymore!!!" With that, I walked away as fast as I could
from Samantha, hearing her still laughing at me. Samantha may be a
friend to me, but she is not as good as Maria. At least Maria is
motherly and supportive of me. Like Kevin, Samantha is also jealous of
my many talents in the arts, and jumps at any chance to make fun of me.

The way I walked so quickly, I thought I got home in no time at all. But
I was there, at last. "Home Sweet Home." I muttered with a huge sigh
and went inside. Closing the door behind me and placing my bag on the
floor next to it, I heard my Mother's voice say," Windy Wendy? Is that
you?" Hearing my Mother's voice always sounds sweet to me. But I was in
no mood today for that. "Hi Mom. I'm home." I replied with no energy or
feeling in my voice.

Mom and my Grandmother, whom I call Nana, came into the Living room
where I was sitting. "Is my Windy Wendy feeling glum on this nice day?"
Nana asked, feeling concerned for me. Looking at her and Mom squarely
in the eye, I knew there was no holding back. "No, I am feeling just
terrible!!!" I exclaimed, bursting into tears. Nana and Mom sat down
on the couch next to me and each of them held one of my hands. "Tell
us what happened at school today." they both said in unison. Taking a
tissue out of my jeans pocket, I dabbed at my eyes, ignoring the fact
that my Mascara and eye shadow were ruined. I started slowly, giving
them as much detail as I could, everything from my destroyed picture to
the laughingstock of my ripped skirt. I concluded my speech by showing
them my ripped skirt and saying, " This is what happened to it. I hope
it can get fixed because it's so special to me, Nana." Mom took the
skirt from me, examined it, and said, " Don't worry, Wendy. Miss Frieda
was right. It can be fixed. Right, Abigail?" She turned to Nana.

Nana had a sparkle in her eye. "Right as rain, Marina. In fact, we can
all go outside, do what gives us pleasure, talk some more, and I will
fix Windy's skirt." Mom and I thought that was a great idea. Especially
me, since I need some fun after a hard day like today. After I calmed
down a little, I went to my bedroom, grabbed my canvas, paints, and
brushes. Then I went outside to the patio with Mom and Nana. I set up
my canvas and supplies and began to paint over a sketch I made of a
Still Life of a vase with flowers on a window sill. Mom was deeply
reading a Romance novel, and Nana was using her sewing kit to fix my
skirt.

While I was painting, I thought of something. "Mom, Nana, do you think I
could ever have a boyfriend?" Mom and Nana looked at each other.
"Sure, Wendy. Why do you ask?" Mom replied. I explained how mean Kevin
always is to me and how I feel that no boy could ever be nice and
supportive of me.

Nana stood up, walked over to me and gave me a big hug. "I wouldn't
spend even one minute worrying about that, my little Windy Wendy. The
right boy will come through for you, no matter what." Mom agreed. "
Yes, you are a very sweet lady, Windy. I bet, deep down, every person
you meet and know is very fond of, supports, and is glad to have a
relationship with you." See how my Mother and Grandmother have been
so supportive of me so far? No wonder I feel so close to them. I could
not stop smiling and thanking them after that.

However, something really strange happened just then. When nana
continued to sew my skirt, her spool of red thread fell off her lap and
rolled off the patio, into the bushes. "Fiddlesticks! That was my last
spool of red thread!" she muttered.

I looked up from my painting and saw where the spool went. It rolled
into the bush that I always thought had a secret in it. Now I can
figure out what it is. "Don't worry, Nana. I can get your red thread
back for you." I volunteered, putting down my brush and palette. Nana
beamed at me. "Thank you so much, Wendy. I know you can do it. I walked
off the patio and up to the bush. I saw a little bit of the thread
sticking out of it and thought, "This ought to be easy to get." With
that, I got on my hands and knees and crawled into the bush. It turned
out that it was just a piece of thread that someone lost and not from
Nana's spool. "Oh well." I sighed and tried to crawl out of the bush.
But I couldn't because a strange sensation came over me, so I sat there
until it stopped. Funny, when I felt better and finally got out of the
bush, everything around me got enormous. The grass, trees, bugs, and
the occasional lost item seem so large to me. It appeared in the
distance that Mom and nana were normal, nothing changed with them .

I finally found the secret to that bush. It was a MAGIC bush!! Somehow,
when I crawled in there, the bush detected my presence and used its
magic to make me shrink. By now, my mind was going a mile a minute. How
will I find Nana's thread now? What if I can never return to normal
size? What if I can never see Mom, Nana, or everyone I like and love
ever again?

At this point, the answers to my questions were not very obvious. I sat
on a very large flagstone and said to myself, " I really messed up
this time. I really deserve to be little and tormented by everyone."
Then I started to cry, again.

This time, my crying was short lived because just then, I heard someone
else crying, even louder than I was. It was coming from behind the sky
scraper sized Oak Tree. "Who could that be?" I wondered and walked over
to investigate.

Peeking around the trunk, I saw who it was. It was a large, yellow and
black winged butterfly. He seemed to be behaving the same way us human
beings do when we cry, with tears, dabbing at the eyes, etc. Being a
compassionate person, I went over to him and said," Excuse me, I
couldn't help but to overhear you crying. What's the matter?" To my
amazement, the butterfly spoke to me. "I got lost from my family,
trying to find a new home. I'm crying because I can't find them." I
was sad to hear this butterfly was lost, as I remember seeing,
everyday, a flock of butterflies happily flying outside my window.
Where could they have gone?

"I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm lost too." I went on explaining why I
was crying also, how rough my day had been, and that I am trying to
find Nana's thread. After hearing my thoughts, the Butterfly got very
intrigued. "Wow, you are an interesting human being. Sorry to hear that
the other humans have been mean to you. I can help you find your Nana's
thread. I may have seen where it went." I smiled at his statements.
"Sure. I would love it if you can help me. In return, I can help you
find your flock also, since I see you and your flock every day."

The way our conversation was going, I would say that the Butterfly and I
would make a great pair. "I've always wanted a companion to help me.
What's your name? My name is Taito Flecks." he said happily, extending
his leg out to me. Smiling at my newfound friend, I told him my name.
"My name is Wendy Michelle Kerns, but everyone calls me Windy Wendy.
Pleased to meet you, Taito. " I shook his leg.

At first, we were not sure which way to go for the thread or the flock.
But when I told Taito about the Magic Bush, he got an idea. "I've
heard about that bush. It can do all kinds of strange things. The bush
may have made the thread roll super quickly into the opposite direction
of it. Since that is where I got lost from my family, I suggest we go
this way." Taito pointed to the left of the Oak Tree, past the Magic
Bush, and into a neighbor's yard.

Taito's plan made a lot of sense to me. The yard looked big and scary,
but to help Taito and to get Nana's thread, I knew I needed to be
brave. "That's a great idea, Taito. But how will I get there? it's way
too far to walk." Taito was not at all concerned like I was. "No
worries, Windy Wendy. I can carry you on my back and we can fly through
the yards on our search. Have you ever tried flying? It's so cool!" he
spread his wings and knelt down beside me.

" I never flown in my whole life. Actually, I'm terrified of it. But
since you offered, I'll trust you won't let me fall and give it a try."
I replied and climbed onto his back.

As quick as a flash, we took off into the air. When we first got off the
ground, I kept my eyes tightly closed as to not look at how high up we
were. "Are you okay, Wendy? You don't need to cover your eyes." Taito
asked. I uncovered my eyes. " I'm fine, Taito. Wow, look at the view!!"
I tell you, flying is so cool when you experience it like I was doing.

Our search took us from yard to yard. When we couldn't find Nana's
thread or the butterfly flock, each yard held clues to where they were.
The clues were dust from butterfly wings and tracks in the grass and
dirt where the spool kept rolling. Finally, there was one yard left in
the neighborhood: Kevin Snyder's yard.

"Taito, I think Nana's thread and the butterflies are in this yard. But
it's the yard of the bully, Kevin, I told you about. I don't know if I
can do this anymore." As I said this, Taito looked at me in disbelief.
"Wendy, I can't believe you're backing out now after all we are going
through. It's okay to be sad and scared, but you have to be tough in
order to get through this and life itself. Trust me, when you see how
tough you really are in situations like bullying, teasing, or being
scared, you'll go very far."

My mouth was open in astonishment. Who knew Taito was so wise? I didn't,
and he really does care for me, as I just seen. "Thank you for your
words, Tai. I feel much better and you just changed my mind Let's go
get that thread and your flock, no matter what." Taito gave me a
satisfied grin. With that, I hopped onto his back and took off for
Kevin's yard.

We skimmed the whole yard. I got off of Taito's back and took a closer
took. In the corner of the yard, next to a picnic table, was a red
spider web. "That can't be a web." I said, "Webs aren't red." I walked
up to it and felt it. I realized that it was Nana's thread!! the thread
was all finely tangled, with the spool next to me, about twice my size.

I called Taito over and asked him to help me untangle the thread and put
it back onto the spool. "Sure Can, Windy. With my skill, we can get it
done in no time." He was right. In what seemed like seconds, the thread
was back on the spool and ready to take back to Nana. We were just
about to leave, when suddenly, we saw Kevin and one of his Hooligans in
the yard, looking at the sky. "Is there anything fluffier than a
cloud?" he asked Kevin. "If there is, I don't want to know about it."
Kevin replied. Taito and I wondered how to leave without disturbing
them. But something else caught our attention. About a foot away from
us, stood a towering spray can and a pile of what looked like leaves.
It was a grim discovery because when we looked closer, it turned out to
be a can of Bug Spray and the leaves were dead butterflies!!!! Taito
stepped closer and said softly," Mom, Dad, anyone? I'm so sorry this
happened to you. I didn't know it would come to this. " He brushed away
a tear and turned to me. "That Kevin human has killed my family, the
whole flock. I didn't know he is that heartless."

I walked up to Taito and gave him a big hug. "I'm so sorry to see this
happen, Tai. If you wish, when I find a way to return to normal size,
you can live with me and I can take care of you as someone special to
me, like a boyfriend. I can even teach you all about the arts that I
do. You won't be left as an orphan."

My Sweet words and offer made Taito's sad, tragic feelings disappear
almost instantly. "You are the sweetest human being I ever met. I would
love that so much. We would make a great pair." We hugged again and
Taito playfully mussed my auburn hair. I didn't mind at all. Our
sentimental moment, however, was rudely interrupted when two very large
shadows fell over us. Kevin and his Hooligan had spotted us!!! "Look
what we have here. Another butterfly to kill and a Windy Wendy insect.
You're mine now!" Kevin said and he and his Hooligan started towards
us. Taito and I began to run away from them. "Leave us alone!!!" I
called to them," Pick on someone your own size for once!!" But Kevin's
friend grabbed me anyway and began to do things to torture me, like
squeezing, and trapping me inside a jar. Taito, meanwhile, was
confronted by Kevin. Kevin was trying to crush him to kill him!!! But
Taito was too smart for Kevin. He picked up the bug spray can and
said, "You killed my friends and family. Now you get a taste of your
own medicine!!" He sprayed the spray in Kevin's face, which stunned him
for a moment.

While Kevin was stunned and his friend was helping him, Taito quickly
flew over to me, still stuck in the jar. "Brace yourself." he told me
and I did so. Quick as a flash, he pushed the jar off the table, where
it hit the concrete and shattered. I was free!! "Thank you so much.
You're a lifesaver!" I quickly grabbed Nana's thread and hopped onto
Taito's back just when we heard Kevin say," There they are! Let's get
them!!" He and his friend started towards us. Taito and I took off with
them close behind.

They chased us through almost every yard on the block. We were just
about to enter my yard, Taito said, panting," What do we do now?
They'll never stop until they get us at this point." He made a good
point, so I thought for a minute. " Don't worry, Tai. I have an idea
that's sure to work."

My idea went into action like this. When we entered my yard with Kevin
and his friend behind us, I told Taito to fly towards the Magic Bush. I
knew there was a patch of mud there, so when they lunged for us, they
slid on the mud, and fell into the bush. "What the **** is going on?"
"I can't feel my feet!!!" "Ga-Ga!!" were some of the things Kevin and
his friend were wailing as the bush worked its magic on them. Taito and
I watched, intrigued, wondering what the bush would do to them. When
the bush was done, Boy, were we surprised and amused. Kevin crawled out
of the bush, transformed into a baby! He was carrying a blanket that
had a face on it. I think the bush changed Kevin's friend into Kevin's
security blanket. "Ga-Ga Goo, Endy." Kevin said to me as he crawled
off, carrying his friend. "hey! Don't drool on me, you stupid baby. I
still have my dignity!!!" he protested as Kevin put a corner of his
friend in his mouth.

I breathed a sigh of relief. "I'm so glad that's over. No more Kevin
Snyder!!" Taito was happy too. "That's right. All's well that ends
well. Ready to try becoming your normal size again, Windy Wendy?" I
nodded happily and walked into the bush. Just as before, I felt a
sensation over me, only this time, the inside of the bush got smaller.
I crawled out of the bush, I was my normal size again!! Looking down at
Taito, he now looked so tiny.

Taito became nervous and drew back from me. "It's okay, Tai. It's me,
Windy Wendy." I assured him and patted him with my finger. Then I got
an idea. "Why don't you try going inside the Magic Bush? I'm sure it
will help you." Taito, still nervous, was hesitating. "I don't know
about this, Wendy." I pushed him into the bush with my hand. " Live a
little, Tai." The bush worked its magic on Taito.

Before long, Taito crawled out of the bush, transformed into a human
being!! He looked about my age, tall with light skin, Baby Blue eyes,
and dark Blonde hair. "How do I look?" Taito asked me. Smiling, I
handed him my pocket mirror. "See for yourself." After close
examination, Taito shouted for joy. "It's a dream come true!! Thank you
so much, Wendy and the Magic Bush. I was very happy as well. Our
happiness was interrupted by Mom and Nana calling me from the porch.
"Come on." I took Taito by the hand and we went to the porch. There,
I presented Nana with her red thread. "Thank you so much, Windy Wendy.
Now I can finish your skirt for you." I told her and Mom all about my
adventure, introduced Taito to them, and talked about him, too.

After talking to Taito for a little while, Mom and Nana seemed to have
taken an instant liking to him. While Taito was relaxing on a chair on
the porch, they took me aside. "Wendy, since we got a chance to get to
know Taito and his situation, and the two of you are great together,
we decided that he may live with us as long as he wishes." Mom
explained and tapped me on the nose. "Now you can have the boy you
wished for, Windy." Nana added.

I can't describe how overjoyed I was at the news. "Thank you so very
much, Mom and Nana!!! You're the best!!!" I hugged and kissed them
both. Then we went over to Taito and told him our decision. Taito was
just as overjoyed as I was. "You're very great and full of heart to do
this for me. I love Wendy a lot and I think we'll live together
nicely." Nana waved her hand. "It was nothing, Tai. Remember, our home
is your home."

From that day on, Taito lives in my house, in the guest bedroom, near
mine. We spend time together almost every day, whether going to High
School, myself teaching him how to sing, paint, dance, etc. or simply
just hanging out. I tell you, he is so much fun to teach things to and
great company also.

Once I introduced him to everyone at High school, when Taito became a
new student there, my experience has gotten better and better as no one
torments me at school anymore. Taito and I, above everything, get a
chance to know each other even further and build a special bond with
each other.

One afternoon when we got off the bus, joking about how Kevin Snyder got
turned into a baby, Kevin's Mother came up to us, carrying a baby. " Hi
Wendy!! Long time no see. I didn't know you have a boyfriend!" I
introduced her to Taito, talked about him, and how I've been doing in
school and in my arts.

When Taito and I saw the baby, we both asked," Is that your baby, Mrs.
Snyder? He's so cute!" Kevin's Mother shook her head. "No. For some
strange reason, I found him in my yard and Kevin has mysteriously
disappeared. So I've been taking care of this baby, searching for
Kevin, and looking for the baby's Mother. I've had no luck in my search
for both."

"We're so sorry to hear that, Mrs. Snyder. I'm sure that whatever
happens, you will be a great parent to that baby and Kevin will be safe
and sound." Taito assured her, even though we both knew that the baby
IS Kevin. "Thank you for letting us know, Mrs. Snyder. If we see
anything, we'll let you know." I said to her as we began to leave.
Kevin's Mother thanked us, told Taito it was a pleasure to meet him,
and walked off. As she walked off, Kevin gave me an evil look and
said, "Na-Ga, Endy."

In response, I made a face at him that made him cry. "That oughta show
him." I muttered. Taito grinned. "It sure will, Wendy. "he said, "It
sure will." That made us both laugh as we headed home for the day. That
was my story. It taught me that, even if a day goes bad, something good
always comes from it, no matter what. I am always happy that Taito came
into my life that day. As we spend our lives together, we'll help
strengthen each other by our love and support. Our story and love will
live on beyond a lifetime. ***
