Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story around, When all of a sudden Gertie took off with a bound! "Gertie, where are you going at such a fast pace? A person might think you are running a race!" She hollered to me, "I want to catch that big trout; I'm going to jump in the lake and pull it right out." Sally yelled, "No, we're not allowed near the water! Good heavens, I can't imagine why we ever brought her!" Gertie stood up and put her paws on her hips, And said, "Dogs are allowed to go in for dips." "And not only that, but I think I brought you! So we'll stay away from the water; let's do something new. Let's go lie in the grass and look up at the sky. We'll picture shapes in the clouds as they go drifting by." "This cloud that's approaching looks just like a cow; And there's one like a butterfly floating by now." We lay in the grass for what seemed like hours; Then Gertie said, "Come on, let's go smell the flowers." We wandered and roamed and Gertie named trees. We watched birds and the squirrels and a few bumblebees. I picked up bright leaves, some acorns and rocks; There was so much to carry I wished for a box! We listened to crickets and watched grasshoppers leap; Then sat very still to watch the ants creep. Gertie could name every sound that we heard; She even could whistle the song of each bird. We've had a wonderful day, but it's getting quite late; And it's been several hours since the last time we ate. We're heading for home, and we're not very dirty; It's been the best Saturday ever, thanks to Galloping Gertie. It's hard to say "Bye", and we're both pretty sad; But Gertie said, "Cheer up, what fun we've all had. Whenever you're bored, just think of today... You've had a whole lot of fun in a quite different way." "Turn off the TV and use your own head; There's so much to do," our Gertie said. "You can go for a walk or play in the park; Or watch the lightning bugs glow in the dark." "You can go to the library and find a good book; Where else can you read about old Captain Hook? Remember today, and just lie in the grass; Take time to watch butterflies as they flutter past." So the next time you're bored and have nothing to do Remember what Gertie's been saying to you; "Think for yourself and turn off that set... There are zillions of things that you haven't tried yet." "I can't stay any longer, I have to be gone," Said Gertie as she galloped across the front lawn. "There are millions of kids; my job's never done; I have to teach all of them how to have fun." Tweet
